The standout scene between Mescal and Colman, during an intimate dinner accompanied by generous pours of wine, is arguably the most amusing and endearing in the entire movie. It serves as a testament to Mescal’s acting prowess, holding its own alongside the formidable talent of Olivia Colman, an accomplished actress in her own right. Don’t miss it on Netflix.
8 The Deceived (2020)
The TV series titled “The Deceived” revolves around a character named Ophelia (Emilie Richard), who studies at Cambridge. She becomes romantically involved with her lecturer, Dr. Michael Callaghan (Emmet J. Scanlan). Upon learning she’s pregnant, Ophelia travels to Donegal, the place where he resides, and uncovers that his wife, Roisin (Catherine Walker), has recently died under mysterious circumstances.

In the role of Sean McKeogh, a dedicated volunteer firefighter and builder within the town, I have the pleasure of assisting Ophelia in uncovering the truth behind the mystery. Although my part may not be the largest, it’s evident that the camera is drawn to me, as the audience’s interest surges whenever I make an appearance on-screen. Filmed after Normal People, but released prior to the Hulu TV series, this was my last performance before becoming a household name. Unfortunately, the show isn’t currently available for streaming.
7 Carmen (2022)
Hailing from Bizet’s timeless opera, Carmen stands out as a distinctive motion picture due to its blend of musical composition with intense dramatic sequences. The narrative revolves around Carmen, portrayed by Melissa Barrera, who embarks on a journey to depart from Mexico following her mother’s tragic demise. 6 God’s Creatures (2022)
The film “God’s Creatures” isn’t light viewing, since it tackles sensitive subjects like sexual assault and the “boys will be boys” mentality within the narrative set in a small Irish fishing village. When Brian (Mescal) returns home after living abroad for many years, his mother, Aileen (played brilliantly by Emily Watson), resorts to deception to shield him. In this instance, Mescal employs his charisma for nefarious purposes as his character is a man-child who may be far more morally corrupt than Aileen believed she had raised.

Both performances are very understated and internal, and Mescal is able to sell this immature, selfish man using the same tools he normally uses to get audiences on his side, making this story even tougher to watch. Mescal earned a British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Performance, and when discussing the edgy role, Mescal told W Magazine:
I wouldn’t be playing this role if I didn’t believe they were aiming to portray the character in a way that is more authentic to individuals who perpetrate sexual assault. They’re not merely monstrous figures lurking around, but rather people we know. I wanted Brian to feel relatable to the audience.
