As a seasoned observer of the Indian film industry, I must say that the tale of Karan Arjun’s production is as captivating and dramatic as any Bollywood blockbuster itself. Rakesh Roshan’s unwavering faith in his project amidst initial skepticism from all corners, coupled with the serendipitous returns of Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, makes for a cinematic masterclass in perseverance and adaptability.
To mark its 30th anniversary, director Rakesh Roshan is planning a theater comeback for the classic movie Karan Arjun. In a recent conversation, Roshan shared some behind-the-scenes stories about how Shah Rukh Khan initially stepped away from the project, ultimately giving way to Aamir Khan’s casting. However, SRK expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Roshan later, as he was the one who launched him as an actor in King Uncle. Interestingly, Ajay Devgn was originally involved in the film but had to depart, paving the way for Salman Khan’s inclusion in the cast.
During a conversation with SCREEN, Rakesh Roshan shared an interesting tidbit: aside from him and his scriptwriter, there were no other people who supported the project at its inception. He reminisced about the time when he announced Karan Arjun for the first time; two distributors decided against the film because it starred two romantic leads, neither of whom had any prior experience with action roles.
Initially, there was skepticism about the movie, but everyone believed in Roshan. In the end, it was the viewers who warmly accepted the film once it hit the screens.
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that in a recent chat, the director of Krrish shed light on the circumstances surrounding Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan’s absence in Karan Arjun. He mentioned that only Ajay could provide insights into why he decided to step away from the movie.
Additionally, it was noted that Shah Rukh originally planned to take on the role that was originally meant for Ajay, as he desired a change from his usual image. At the same time, Ajay aspired to assume the role previously held by Shah Rukh, hoping to alter his own public persona.
Yet, it was evident that Roshan wasn’t intending to modify their public personas, but rather, he chose to direct the movie since the characters needed to be enacted in accordance with how they were initially conceived.
He continued by revealing that following the departures of Khan and Devgn from the project, he chose Aamir Khan and Salman Khan to take their roles instead. Later on, SRK came back and showed interest in collaborating with him, mentioning that Roshan had been instrumental in launching him as an actor through King Uncle.
Although he didn’t personally buy into the plot, Jawan actor found himself tossing and turning at night, feeling an overwhelming urge to collaborate with Roshan. Later, Roshan shared that Shah Rukh Khan was available for filming the following month, and Aamir gave his approval for Roshan to commence work with SRK.
Karan Arjun is all set for a theatrical re-release on November 22, 2024.
