I Decided To Rewatch Moana Ahead Of The Sequel, And I Need To Talk About Why Moana Stands Out Among Disney Princesses

As a child of the 90s, I grew up watching Disney classics like Ariel and Belle, but none of them ever resonated with me as deeply as Moana did when it was released. Coming from a Polynesian background, seeing a character that mirrored my own heritage on the big screen was nothing short of magical.

It’s exciting that Moana 2 is coming up soon, and to prepare myself, I recently watched the original film after quite some time. As I revisit it, I’m becoming more aware of just how exceptional and remarkable Moana stands among Disney princesses.

Sure thing! To be clear, perhaps my choice of words wasn’t the best, but let me clarify. The last time I watched Moana was in December 2022, and previously I saw it in the theater back in November 2016. I’ve always had a soft spot for this movie, even though I haven’t watched it as frequently as some others do. However, I can truly admire every detail of it.

With the upcoming release of Moana 2 and a live-action adaptation on the horizon, I felt it was the perfect moment to reacquaint myself with this brilliant Disney film before we delve into the next one. And let me assure you, Moana is exceptional among all other Disney princesses – here’s why.

First Off, The Movie Is Still Just As Amazing As I Remembered

Before we delve into discussing Moana specifically, let’s chat about this film – it stands out remarkably. I believe that Moana is one of Disney’s top-notch productions and among their finest original films in quite some time. Strange World didn’t impress me. Encanto was entertaining but it doesn’t compare to the greatness of Moana, despite my enjoyment of it. Wish was… a film. That’s all I’ll share on that topic.

Moana shines in every category – from exceptional voice-acting to breathtaking scenery to an engaging storyline. It’s hard to imagine anything surpassing what this movie offered. I find it surprising that Moana didn’t come close to the box office success of Frozen, as I believe this film was even more stunningly crafted.

Additionally, I sincerely wish that Moana 2 maintains its original charm. However, let’s delve into the actual character we’re discussing – Moana herself.

But Let’s Be Honest, Moana Is Truly One Of The Best Disney Heroines – NOT A Princess

Moana is one of the best Disney heroines – not a princess.

As a gamer, I’ve always been intrigued by the depiction of Moana at Disney parks versus her true identity as the daughter of a chief, as she herself has stated. Despite Maui mocking her about being a princess, it’s essential to acknowledge that she’s not one in reality. Yet, there’s no denying that she shines among the rest, standing out in a unique and captivating way.

Despite being a typical teenager, as many Disney princesses often are, Moana sets herself apart through her remarkable determination. She firmly upholds her convictions, disregarding the opinions of others. While it’s true that some other Disney princesses have shown similar strength, Moana’s unwavering resolve truly makes her unique in this regard.

Moana seems to carry a strong sense of duty that I believe sets her apart from many other Disney princesses. The only ones who could possibly be compared to her are Mulan and Belle, both known for their responsibility and willingness to shoulder significant burdens, particularly in regards to their fathers. However, unlike them, Moana’s responsibility extends far beyond her family – it is for the wellbeing of her entire island.

She’s spirited, and she’s braver than many others; you wouldn’t want to cross her with either her paddle or her words. She’s exactly the kind of Disney heroine I adore.

As A Teenager Who Loved Disney, It Was So Refreshing To See Someone That Looked Relatively Like Me

I don’t identify as Polynesian or Hawaiian; instead, I was raised Puerto Rican. My cultural pride and heritage run deep, which is why I adore movies like “Coco”, one of Pixar’s finest films.

Grew up, I did, adoring Disney princesses, but never saw a reflection of myself – someone with cascading waves, proudly flaunting my distinctive features, including those captivating brown eyes. No one who didn’t alter themselves for anyone, if you know what I mean.

As a teenager, I experienced a range of emotions when Moana debuted, even though she wasn’t from my culture. It made me wonder about the impact it had on young girls everywhere, especially those who saw themselves in her for the first time or Polynesian girls who felt a strong connection because she resembled them. What an amazing feeling that must have been!

She Does Everything For Her People And Is Willing To Give Up Her Dream For A Time For Them

What sets Moana apart from many other Disney heroines is her selfless willingness to sacrifice everything she cherishes for the benefit of others, a trait that’s also evident in characters like Tiana and Mulan. For instance, Tiana chose to postpone socializing with her friends to focus on her work, as portrayed in “The Princess and the Frog.” Similarly, Mulan relinquished her freedom to participate in a war for her father’s sake, as shown in the movie “Mulan.” Both characters serve as strong role models.

All the expressions of affection for Moana are meaningful, but there’s an extra touch about her that deepens my connection with her. From infancy, the ocean has been a part of her life. It’s not just her profession or territory; it’s her calling. Remarkably, even when her father declares this as her home, she is ready to put it aside for the sake of her people, especially after bravely attempting to sail despite being terrified beforehand.

However, when she assumes this new responsibility and extends aid, the island gradually deteriorates, prompting her to confront her deep-rooted fear of returning to the sea following a near-drowning incident. This act, in which she chose to save her people over her own safety, requires an extraordinary level of courage and resilience, traits that are seldom found.

And Even Then, She Brings Everyone All Together To Sail Again

One significant action taken by Moana is that she confronts an entire generation’s emotional burden, a trauma that has caused her island to remain stationary for years. This hardship was brought upon the islanders due to past events. However, Moana returns triumphant after reviving the heart of their island and confidently leads her family and tribe into a fresh era, one that their ancestors could take pride in.

At sixteen, Moana wasn’t just lounging around like the rest of us; instead, she was already working to save an entire tribe! Can you imagine what you would have been doing at that age?

She was able to bring an entire trade back into their lives, to explore new oceans and more, and that’s something that really can’t be beat.

That Being Said, I Can’t Wait For Moana 2

I’m quite eager for the upcoming film, Moana 2, even though there were original plans to present it as a stage show at one point. Yet, my enthusiasm remains undimmed; I believe it will turn out splendidly on the big screen.

Based on the trailers and sneak peeks that I’ve watched, including Moana’s adorable new baby sister, I believe Moana 2 will be fantastic. While it may not reach the same level of greatness as the original – sequels can often be challenging to perfect – I am confident it will still be enjoyable.

For many years, Moana will continue to captivate us as an exceptional Disney heroine and an inspiring young woman whom we’ll see much more often.

Now, all I need is a Pua plushie, and I think I’ll be ready for the sequel.
