As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for Broadway and musicals, I simply can’t contain my excitement over the upcoming release of “Wicked”! The recent viral interview between Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Carla Renata has me absolutely beaming. It turns out that our beloved Glinda and Elphaba were just as starstruck by Carla’s Broadway background as I am by their musical prowess!
In about a week’s time, the premiere of “Wicked” is drawing near, and in anticipation, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been globetrotting to promote the film musical, engaging with various audiences. During this press tour, a moment that went viral occurred when the actresses playing Glinda and Elphaba discovered they were seated opposite a seasoned Broadway performer. Their reactions were priceless!
During an interview with the stars of the Wicked movie on The Curvy Critic aka Carla Renata, the host revealed at the end of their conversation that she, too, is part of the Broadway community, thereby establishing a shared bond with Ariana Grande.
It seems Ariana Grande may have reacted with shock, possibly damaging her microphone, based on her startled exclamation “What?!”. This came when Carla Renata mentioned that Grande and Cynthia Erivo were both involved in the musical Avenue Q, at the same time as Grande’s early Broadway debut in 13 at age 15, which was back in 2008. Both Grande and Erivo appeared equally surprised and enthusiastic about sharing their love for Avenue Q with Renata during the interview. The conversation continued to be lively after Renata moved from her seat.
As Renata was leaving the interview, she unexpectedly shared that she had been disguised as Gary Coleman from the long-running, witty Broadway production which mimics Sesame Street, featuring both human actors and puppets. In this show, Gary is a fictional character representing the real-life child actor, who plays a maintenance worker in Avenue Q.
As Renata carried on her conversation with the stars, they were clearly thrilled by her and harmoniously sang along to Avenue Q tunes. It’s clear these two share a love for theater. Besides her role in Avenue Q, theater enthusiasts might appreciate knowing that Renata has also graced stages in productions of The Lion King, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Notably, she played the character Janet in Superstore, and has appeared in series such as Hart of Dixie and Shake It Up.
It’s quite surprising that in 2004, “Avenue Q” was awarded the Tony for Best Musical instead of “Wicked”. This might be why Ariana Grande has had to keep her affection for the musical under wraps. The way Grande and Erivo responded to Renata’s mention of “Wicked”, followed by them dashing out of their seats, seems like it could become a popular reaction meme.
It’s fair to assume that the movie Wicked, slated for release on November 22, 2024, is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year, and it’s almost here! The excitement around it isn’t waning, as evidenced by Carla Renata and the leads who have gone viral in a recent interview. We can hardly contain our anticipation for their reunion when the second part of Wicked is released next year!
