As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for both blockbusters and indies, I find Elizabeth Olsen‘s approach to her career nothing short of inspiring. Her unconventional “one for me, one for them” philosophy is a refreshing take on Hollywood stardom, especially in the era where big-budget films dominate the scene.
In Hollywood’s traditional approach to filmmaking known as “one for me, one for them,” actors often take on big-budget studio projects followed by independent films. However, Elizabeth Olsen, a star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), doesn’t adhere to this practice and is deeply appreciative of her MCU role for opening doors to indie opportunities. Olsen debuted as Wanda Maximoff, also known as The Scarlet Witch, in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). Since then, she has been a consistent presence in the Avengers series, leading her own spin-off, WandaVision, and assuming the role of the main antagonist in Doctor Strange in the Multi-Verse of Madness. Aside from the MCU, Olsen prefers to avoid major blockbusters and instead stars in critically acclaimed independent films and series such as His Three Daughters, Kodachrome, and The Assessment.
At Vulture Fest, Olsen expressed gratitude towards Marvel Studios and the MCU for offering her the financial security that enables her to work on passion projects and indie movies. Although she’s starred in several critically acclaimed indie films, it’s clear these don’t bring in the same income as a blockbuster from Marvel Studios like those with a billion-dollar budget. She went on to say:
Marvel has served as a reliable constant in my life, providing a sense of security that allows me to explore various job opportunities without feeling tied down. This sense of security means I don’t approach new jobs with the mindset of ‘Then I’ll do this to do this.’
Elizabeth Olsen Says Indie Films Need Blockbuster Movies to Survive
Elizabeth Olsen stated that her portrayal of Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was primarily motivated by the development of the character, rather than financial reasons or contract obligations. In other words, each appearance of Wanda was necessary for the storyline progression, not just to keep Olsen employed.
“They usually ask you to come back because they have a plan in mind, not just for the sake of it.
Over the past few years, the competition between mainstream blockbuster films and independent filmmakers has grown more intense. After Martin Scorsese’s controversial comments about “amusement park” movies (which he continues to face criticism for), other actors and directors have voiced their opinions, particularly against the superhero genre and heavily CGI-reliant blockbusters in general.
Contrarily to some opinions, Olsen contends that blockbuster movies like those in the MCU don’t harm independent filmmaking. In fact, she argues that they aid smaller films by giving theaters financial stability through ticket sales. This stability enables theaters to screen indie films with reduced risk of financial consequences. Currently, Olsel is not confirmed for any future MCU roles, but her desire to reprise her character as Scarlet Witch has been acknowledged by Marvel’s Kevin Feige, who didn’t specify a return date.
“All I can say is that we’re excited to find out when and how she can come back.”
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating my next Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure with “Captain America: A Daring New Journey,” slated for release on Valentine’s Day, 2025.
