As a gamer who’s spent countless hours binge-watching Netflix shows and movies, I must say that Hot Frosty has certainly become one of my favorites this holiday season. The film, with its unique blend of humor, heartwarming moments, and a dash of Christmas magic, is a delightful addition to the platform.
There are minor SPOILERS down below for Hot Frosty. If you still need to catch the new Christmas film, you can check it out with a Netflix subscription.
If you’ve been checking the Netflix release schedule for 2024, you may have noticed that the movie “Hot Frosty” appeared on your recommendations list recently. This film tells the story of a snowman who becomes human and melts the heart of a widow, with Dustin Milligan in the lead role as Jack. Jack is a character who loves TV, and when asked if Jack somehow watched “Schitt’s Creek,” and what he might take away from it, Milligan provided a witty yet endearing response.
To provide further understanding, the story centers around Kathy (played by Lacey Chabert). Her life takes an unusual turn when a snowman she adorned with a scarf miraculously transforms into a human named Jack. Intrigued by the human world, Jack spends his days observing it, often found in Kathy’s living room, watching television. As you might imagine, the humor in this situation is plentiful.
Dustin Milligan has been seen in several television shows previously, including “X Company” and “Rutherford Falls”, but is most recognized as Ted Mullens from the popular comedy series “Schitt’s Creek”, which ran from 2015 to 2020. Naturally, when I got an opportunity to chat with the actor from “Hot Frosty” about what Jack could discover if he accidentally found “Schitt’s Creek”, his initial response was pricelessly humorous:
I think I would learn that puns are hilarious and are the highest form of comedy. I think that would be first and foremost.
Schitt’s Creek is famous for its clever wordplay, and I couldn’t agree more. However, John Milligan also pointed out that while the witty puns are excellent, Schitt’s Creek also delivers valuable lessons that echo throughout the series. Among these lessons, one of the most significant themes is the importance of shedding your old identity to discover who you truly are deep within. In essence, Milligan suggests that the show encourages viewers to embrace change and self-discovery.
In Schitt’s Creek, there are similarities in the messages and ideas we touch upon, much like this film, which often emphasizes the need to relinquish preconceived notions about oneself to uncover one’s true self.
Milligan jokingly added that the “pun thing” is more likely to be the priority, though:
But I think more importantly, the pun thing is probably number one on the list.
His heartfelt response is one that I can totally see. Schitt’s Creek has so many funny characters, but at its core, the show is about people learning to become better versions of themselves over time with the help of others.
In essence, just like “Schitt’s Creek,” “Hot Frosty” also portrays characters evolving and growing throughout their stories, resulting in improved versions of themselves. This shared trait might suggest a strong link between the two shows. However, it’s questionable whether Jack’s character could thrive in the chaotic environment of the Rose family. It seems more fitting for him to remain within the peaceful setting of his holiday movie.
Since its debut, the movie “Hot Frosty” has been a hit on Netflix, and it’s often described by critics as “playful” or “lustful.” However, don’t let that fool you – this snowman character is just as capable of showing love and affection as Kathy is, if not more so. If you haven’t yet seen “Hot Frosty,” I highly recommend streaming it for a dose of heartwarming holiday spirit.
