As a seasoned gamer who has binge-watched more sitcoms than I care to admit, I must say that “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” is striking a chord with me in a way that few shows manage these days. The heartrending portrayal of the Cooper family’s first Thanksgiving without George Sr. in “Thanksgiving,” Episode 5, left me wiping away tears and feeling a pang of nostalgia for my own family gatherings.

As I sat down to watch episode 5 of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” titled “Thanksgiving,” I knew the Cooper family was in for a tough time without George around for their first major holiday. But what unfolded left me speechless, as the raw emotions pouring out from every family member were like nothing I had ever seen before. Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry), in particular, seemed to be hit hardest by George’s absence, her heart shattering as she watched Mandy’s parents argue, reminding her of the bickering between her and George.
The emotional scene is made more complex because some members of the Cooper family, such as characters like Young Sheldon and Meemaw (Annie Potts), were not present at the grave site, despite being in the McAllister household earlier. However, it was revealed that there was a reason for Meemaw’s absence from the cemetery. The show’s executive producer, Steve Holland, explained to TVLine that they wanted to focus on the main storylines and felt that the core family should be at the grave. He stated that this event was primarily about Mary, Georgie, and Missy, and the loss of George. Additionally, Holland believed that leaving Meemaw and her boyfriend, Dale (Craig T. Nelson), having dinner with the McAllisters separately added comedic elements to the story.
Of course, Holland had more pressing matters to attend to, since a significant family member from the Cooper clan was unable to return home during the holiday season. Interestingly enough, this plot point was deliberately crafted within the writers’ room to add depth and intrigue to the TV series’ narrative.
The episode also had to explain another important absence
Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) won’t be heading back to Texas for Thanksgiving, a development that aligns well with the “Big Bang Theory” continuity. In the series, an older Sheldon (Jim Parsons) often chooses not to return home after settling at CalTech. This was a consideration by Steve Holland when writing the episode, as they briefly considered incorporating the character into the storyline.
Holland explained to TVLine that “including Sheldon in the conversation was definitely considered – sort of like, ‘Is Sheldon involved here?'” However, during the planning stages of the episode, it seemed that his presence would negatively impact the storyline. Additionally, he mentioned that the Cooper family is experiencing a degree of separation, and having Sheldon remain absent seems fitting given this development.
While it might seem like an indication that Sheldon could appear in the remaining holiday episodes of Season 1, Holland clarified that there won’t be a Christmas story this season. Consequently, Sheldon will remain absent from the Cooper family’s new life experiences, as they hold onto their mixed recollections, including both pleasant and difficult memories, from their past.
