As a gamer who’s been around the block a few times, I can say Paul Teal was more than just a talented actor to his fans and colleagues. He was a beacon of resilience and determination, battling cancer while still giving his all on set. His performances in shows like One Tree Hill, The Walking Dead, and Outer Banks were always captivating, but it’s his off-screen spirit that truly left an impact.
I’m sad to share the news that Paul Teal, who played the character Josh Avery, the closeted actor on the seventh season of The CW’s “One Tree Hill,” has tragically passed away at the age of 35.
On Friday, Teal passed away following a long struggle against cancer, as confirmed by his representatives. In a heartfelt statement, STW Talent Agency shared, “His remarkable talent and warm-hearted nature made an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to have known him. The void left behind will be profoundly felt.
Paul was more than just my partner; he was my soulmate, my future spouse, my stronghold, and my hope,” Emilia Torello expressed on Instagram about him. “He brought joy to my life with his laughter, excitement with his butterflies in my stomach, and love to my heart. Sadly, the time took him away from us too quickly, yet he fought his battle valiantly and unwaveringly.
She went on to say, “Though a piece of my heart perished alongside you, I vow to strive for happiness just as relentlessly as you did to keep living each day.

I had the privilege of being part of several exciting projects, most notably Adrian Lyne’s 2022 film “Deep Water,” starring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. I’m also looking forward to my roles in upcoming films like “Lilly” with Patricia Clarkson. As for television, you might have caught me on shows such as “Good Behavior,” “Dynasty,” “The Walking Dead,” “Outer Banks,” “The Staircase,” and “George & Tammy.” It’s been an incredible journey so far!
1989 saw the birth of Teal in Wilmington, North Carolina. He graced local stages, performing with the Opera House Theatre Co., the Thalian Association Community Theatre, and the Techmoja Dance and Theater Company. The Wilmington Star-News acknowledged this, as the area around Wilmington was where One Tree Hill was filmed.
The CEO of Thalian Hall, Shane Fernando (who directed Teal in Newsies among other productions), shared with the newspaper that the actor was an “attentive perfectionist,” but in a positive sense. He consistently offered encouragement. While talent is important, what made him delightful to work with and direct was his exceptional supportiveness.
A public memorial at Thalian Hall for Teal is in the works, Fernando said.
