As an ardent admirer of the illustrious Sen-Varma family, I find myself deeply moved by the untimely demise of Bharat Dev Varma. Hailing from a royal lineage that spans across generations, his life was a testament to grace, elegance, and the indomitable spirit of the Sen-Varma dynasty.
On Tuesday (November 19, 2024), Bharat Dev Varma, husband of actress Moon Moon Sen and father of Raima and Riya Sen, tragically passed away at his home in Kolkata. As reported by ANI, Bharat’s health deteriorated rapidly, leading his family to summon an ambulance from a hospital in the Dhakuria area. Regrettably, he succumbed before the ambulance arrived.
Bharat hailed from the lineage of the past ruling family in Tripura. His mother, Ila Devi, was a princess from Cooch Behar and the elder sister to Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur. His grandmother, Indira, was the only child born to Searji Rao Gaikwad III, the Maharaja of Vadodara.
In 1978, Bharat Dev Varma married Moon Moon Sen, a well-known figure in Bengali film industry. Notably, Moon Moon is also of royal descent, being the daughter of renowned Bengali actress Suchitra Sen and Dibanath Sen, a prosperous businessman from Kolkata.
Her ancestors held significant roles within Tripura’s royal history, with her great-grandfather, Dinanath Sen, acting as a high-ranking advisor to the King of Tripura.
West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared her sadness on her account regarding the passing of Bharat Dev Varma, who was married to actress Moon Moon Sen. Varma was not only a dear friend but also had a special affection for me, and I will forever cherish his memories.
It continued, “He truly considered me as part of his family and his demise is a great loss for me. After getting the news today morning, I visited their Ballygunge residence, where their daughter Riya was present. Moon Moon and Raima are coming from Delhi. I paid my respect to the departed and condolences to the family.”

Moon Moon Sen experienced a successful rise in her film career following her marriage and the arrival of her children. It was her initial acting role in the film “Andar Baahar” that gained significant recognition, particularly due to its somewhat contentious character portrayal.
Over the course of her acting career, she appeared in more than 60 movies and around 40 TV shows, earning recognition with awards such as the Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
Raima and Riya Sen, her two daughters, have ventured down the same route as she did in Bollywood, garnering success through numerous hit movies.
