Frank Grillo Says James Gunn's 'Superman' Trailer Gave Him Goosebumps

As a die-hard DC fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming projects, particularly James Gunn’s Superman. The anticipation is palpable, and every morsel of information we get feels like a superpowered treat. Frank Grillo, who’s been in the loop thanks to his role as Rick Flag Sr., has left us green with envy by teasing his electrifying reaction to the trailer. If I could trade places with him just for that moment, I would!

Fans of DC comics are eagerly anticipating two significant upcoming productions: “The Batman Sequel” and James Gunn’s “Superman.” The former is yet to arrive, while the latter is slated for a theater release in July 2025. With less than eight months remaining until its premiere, most of what fans have seen of “Superman” comes from two official images and a collection of leaked set photos. As a result, there’s a lot of excitement building up, with everyone eagerly awaiting the trailer. One individual who has had a sneak peek is Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe, and he’s been tantalizing fans with his enthusiastic response to it.

Discussing the debut title in the revamped DC Universe, Creature Commandos, Grillo stirred envy among fans when he disclosed that he had a glimpse of footage from the upcoming Superman preview. “I hope I don’t get into trouble for saying this – I caught a sneak peek at a tiny portion of the trailer,” the actor playfully hinted. It has been reported that Rick Flag Sr., who Grillo portrays, will be a recurring character across various DCU projects. Previously, Grillo likened him to the Marvel Cinatic Universe’s Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Apart from voicing Creature Commandos, Grillo will embody Flag Sr. in Superman and Season 2 of Peacemaker. The actor further fueled anticipation for the trailer with his additional comments.

I’m completely serious, and I don’t exaggerate when I say that it was truly remarkable. I felt a heat on my skin and got goosebumps. That’s how amazing it was.

Gunn has been hinting at fans about the impending release of the upcoming teaser, providing a vague timeline during the New York Comic Con in October. At the Creature Commandos panel, he mentioned that while the trailer won’t take much longer, it also won’t be released immediately. A few weeks after NYCC, Gunn clarified that the trailer was still under development as he continued to work on it.

‘Creature Commandos’ Will Launch the New DCU

Before fans see David Corenswet take on the role of Superman, James Gunn is easing us into the new DCU with the animated show Creature Commandos. With Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, the new team is the paranormal equivalent of the Suicide Squad. Led by Rick Flag Sr., the team comprises Doctor Phosphorous (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), Frankenstein (David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma) and Weasel (Sean Gunn).

According to Gunn, although the team is associated with Task Force X (a.k.a The Suicide Squad), he feels a stronger connection to the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which he also helmed. Moreover, he expressed a fondness for Creature Commandos due to their uniqueness and unusual characters, similar to oddballs and irregular types. However, there is a significant distinction between these two teams, as Gunn clarified:

In essence, Guardians embodies certain qualities, while Creature Commandos shares some similarities but lacks the emotional depth found in the characters of Guardians.
