As a gamer with a deep appreciation for the power of community and resilience, I find the Grenfell Athletic FC initiative truly inspiring. The “Fabric of the Community” project encapsulates the essence of healing, remembrance, and unity – values that resonate deeply within gaming culture as well.
The devastating fire at Grenfell Tower stands as one of the most heart-wrenching incidents in modern British history. This two-day inferno claimed the lives of 72 individuals, sparking a wave of public outrage that remains etched in the minds of many Britons to this day. Communities continue to honor and remember those who perished in the fire through various platforms. One such initiative born from the tragedy is Grenfell Athletic FC, a grassroots football club established to foster camaraderie among young men. Recently, this community-focused football team, founded by Rupert Taylor, unveiled a unique new sports kit. This kit was developed in partnership with Nike and Kitlocker and includes fabric pieces salvaged from garments that survived the Grenfell fire, including clothing worn by survivors during their escape on the fateful night.
The new kits were introduced under a project called “Community’s Thread,” where each jersey features a delicate border area encircling the club emblem, specially allocated for a unique piece of fabric. One individual who survived the Grenfell tragedy was Nick Burton; unfortunately, his wife became the 72nd casualty. He chose to donate the shirt worn on that fateful night as part of this project, seeking additional healing from the event through it.
Regarding his contribution to the “Fabric of the Community Campaign” by donating a shirt, Mr Burton expressed: “This shirt is one of my few ties to my hometown. I believe it’s now appropriate for me to part with it, and I’m delighted that it will become a part of the community’s fabric – a community that means everything to us.
In the upcoming 2024/25 season, Grenfell Athletic’s men’s and women’s teams will sport a unique shirt. This shirt, designed by Kitlocker, incorporates Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. By simply tapping your phone on the club badge located on the shirt, you can engage in a digital interaction with the kit. The NFC chip embedded within the badge leads to a moving video that tells a heartwarming story about the fabric of the shirt, as it was donated for this purpose.
Apart from those affected by the Grenfell fire, numerous well-wishers not originally connected to the club have contributed to the campaign as well. For instance, Hector Bellerin, a former Arsenal player, donated a jersey he wore during his time there. Moreover, One Direction member Louis Tomlinson gave away one of his cherished Doncaster Rovers shirts.
