As a long-time Londoner and design enthusiast, I must say that this list of hidden gems and underappreciated spaces is nothing short of delightful! It’s always a pleasure to discover new spots where creativity flourishes, and these places certainly don’t disappoint.
By its very nature, design encompasses a broad spectrum. While it’s commonly associated with furniture, the truth is that design extends far beyond this. Essentially, anything we interact with in our daily lives—each item carefully thought out and consequently “designed” for us to use and enjoy.
According to two authors of a recently published book, London’s design scene is showcased in the most exceptional ways by their findings. Rosa Bertoli and Sujata Burman, formerly Design Editors at Wallpaper* magazine, have explored their hometown extensively to uncover the finest examples of design that it presents.
These culminate in a new book titled “Design London“, published by Hoxton Mini Press as a follow-up to their previous title “An Opinionated Guide to London Architecture”.
For Bertoli and Burman, it was crucial to showcase the wide variety of design available in the metropolis, not just limiting it to high-end boutiques and prestigious galleries. They assure us that London’s design offerings cater to all budgets. “London is a global hub for design,” they affirm, “and you don’t have to be wealthy to appreciate it.” This guide, filled with bold opinions, will lead you on an adventure through the city’s dynamic, ever-changing design scene. Whether you’re interested in admiring Eames chairs, finding exceptional stationery, visiting world-class museums, or uncovering luxurious homeware, this guide will reveal the best of London’s rebellious and innovative design offerings.
To mark the release of the book, we invited people to choose ten essential locations featured in the book, which can be purchased for £10.95 each on the Hoxton Mini Press website.
Read on for their edit.
