Patton Oswalt Comic ‘Minor Threats’ Launches Anthology Spinoff With Matt Fraction, Brian Michael Bendis (Exclusive)

As a seasoned comic book enthusiast and a connoisseur of dark humor, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by this latest development in the world of superhero storytelling. With its unique perspective on the genre, focusing on the lesser-known villains and their struggles, “Welcome to Twilight City” seems to be an ambitious project that is not only challenging the status quo but also promising to deliver a fresh take on familiar tropes.

The universe of “Minor Threats,” a popular comic book by actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum that focuses on the struggles of less recognized, D-list villains, is growing and is now capturing the interest of some top-tier creators.

Matt Fraction, who’s famed for his Eisner Award-winning stint on Marvel’s Hawkeye, and Miles Morales co-creator Brian Michael Bendis are collaborating with acclaimed artists Michael Allred and Gene Ha to produce a series of interconnected stories set within the Minor Threats universe. This anthology mini-series is scheduled for publication by Dark Horse Entertainment in the upcoming year.

In addition to the creative team behind it, Gail Simone, Gerry Duggan, Soo Lee, and Mark Toress are also partaking in a four-issue project known as “Welcome to Twilight City.” This intriguing endeavor will showcase a blend of fresh and familiar characters.

For quite some time now, Oswald and Blum have been mulling over the concept of compiling an anthology. They believe it’s an engaging approach to delve deeper into various aspects of genres. Their past projects, like “The Alternates“, “The Brood“, and “Barfly“, have successfully tackled themes such as psychedelic superheroes, a family drama reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s style, and a coming-of-age story set in the punk rock scene.

Creating an anthology seemed like the ideal method for me to broaden this universe, delving into unexplored subgenres within the realm of heroes and villains,” I expressed. “We tend to concentrate on narratives and characters that may be overlooked at Marvel or DC – the underdogs. Our stories are deeply rooted in character development, and anthologies provide a fantastic platform to highlight each one individually, offering unique perspectives.

Oswald commented, “It might seem predictable, but at times, the spinoff can feel as if it selects us – writers or artists may approach us with concepts regarding a character or unresolved plot point from a previous Minor Threats series. Furthermore, we’ve reached out to our preferred list of writers and artists, inquiring if they have any ideas for exploration within this universe. The enthusiasm shown has been incredible.

The duo of Fraction and Allred are responsible for the debut issue that spotlights Benjamin “Brock” Bronkowicz, an actor with bird wings who was once a superhero on television but isn’t one in reality. Currently, Brock travels the superhero convention circuit, attempting to capitalize on his dwindling stardom, drowning his troubles in alcohol as he slides further into irrelevance. A surprising meeting with a woman shrouded in mystery, however, grants Brock the power to strive for a life he believed was lost forever. Laura Allred is handling the coloring duties, while Nate Piekos is responsible for the lettering.

In the upcoming series, Bendis will pen Issue #2 (“The Oddly Mundane Life of Christopher Chaos”), followed by Issue #3 where Simone takes over writing duties (“Uncanny X-Men”) and Ha contributes the artwork (“Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons”). Lastly, Issue #4 will be written by Gerry Duggan (“Falling in Love on the Path to Hell”) and illustrated by Torres (“Cold Spots”).

The initial problem, titled “From the Realm of Small Perils: Greetings from Twilight City” Issue No. 1, is set to arrive at retailers on March 12, 2025.

In August 2022, the comic book series Threats made its entrance, offering a fresh take on the superhero genre by focusing on the lesser-known villains. This innovative approach resonated with both readers and critics, resulting in an unexpected success. The creators, Oswalt and Blum, capitalized on this momentum to establish a whole universe around their creation. Subsequently, a sequel was released along with a spin-off mini-series.

The live-action series based on the original content is currently being developed for Netflix, with Oswalt and Blum playing dual roles as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Additionally, Dark Horse will be serving as an executive producer in this project.

Duggan’s acquaintance with Oswald dates back to the time when Duggan used to work at the Golden Apple comic shop in LA. There, they developed a friendship as Oswald, being a frequent visitor, shared a common interest in noir with Duggan. This mutual affection for noir genres was the root cause of Duggan’s predicament.

In an email, Duggan expressed his fascination with noir films, particularly those he watched at the New Bev alongside Patton, including titles like “Blast of Silence ” and “The Friends of Eddie Coyle“. He found creating a ‘cleaner’ character in a superhero universe to be an exciting opportunity for storytelling. Our main character is given genuine challenges, and there’s a classic formula reminiscent of Stan, Jack, and Steve that we’ll see in our universe introduction. The primary conflict in the story isn’t about disposing of an invulnerable corpse; it’s more complex. It’s been a pleasure to work together in this shared universe, and Duggan looks forward to spending some time here with his pork pie hat on.

Additionally, Simone playfully shared her anecdote and humorously admitted that her narratives often revolve around characters on the edge of redemption, such as Deadpool and the Secret Six. She expressed joy in imagining that the series creators envisioned a story about a dejected sea creature whose loved ones disregard him and who is undergoing therapy. They thought, ‘Who would be perfect for this role? How about we ask Gail?’ she joked.

In the realm of gaming, as with many adventures, there’s a sense of anything-goes and let’s-see-what-happens vibe that intertwines with Oswald and Blum’s masterful design. It’s clear they’re not just sticking to the rules of this game anthology; they’re pushing boundaries, which has me eagerly anticipating what lies ahead.

He mentioned that while he won’t give away any surprises, certain standalone matters seem to be developing independently and could potentially evolve into ongoing series. Keep an eye out for updates.
