NCIS: Origins Introduced Its Young Fornell, And Gibbs Actor Austin Stowell Shared Why He’s ‘Looking Forward’ To The Characters Meeting

As a seasoned gamer of all things NCIS, I’ve been following this franchise since its inception and have witnessed the evolution of characters like Fornell and Gibbs over two decades. The anticipation for their first meeting on NCIS: Origins is palpable, much like the tension before the final boss battle in a long-awaited video game sequel.

In the “NCIS: Origins” series this month, the character Tobias Fornell, who is usually portrayed by Joe Spano on “NCIS,” made a surprising appearance in an earlier time period. This is the CBS prequel where Lucas Dixon plays Fornell. Since the events of “Origins” take place in 1991, Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, and the younger Fornell have not yet met as Gibbs was just starting at NIS during that time. However, Stowell is excited about the prospect of their future encounter, expressing his thoughts in a recent interview before the next episode of “Origins” airs on the 2024 TV schedule.

Stowell dropped by TVLine’s office for a friendly chat about his role in NCIS: Origins, a series that, along with the entire NCIS collection, can be accessed through a Paramount+ subscription. During this interview with Matt Webb Mitovich, Stowell was asked if he’d share scenes with Dixon, to which he replied:

The bond between them is strong, almost as if from their mother ship. They always seem to have each other’s back, working together frequently and being there for one another in tough times. But what created this connection? There must be some shared past that made them trust and rely on each other so much. I’m eager to find out more about it, and he delivers a great performance. I can’t wait to see how their story unfolds.

In a candid viewpoint, Austin Stowell hints that the character Lala in NCIS: Origins might be the motivation behind Rule 12 as written by Gibbs. This interpretation is nearly persuasive for me.

As NCIS: Origins Explored One of Mike Franks’ Most Challenging Cases, It’s Relieving to Learn What Was Discussed in Gibbs’ Psychiatric Assessment.

Season 1 of the series NCIS: Origins unfolds 12 years prior to the start of NCIS, revealing that Tobias Fornell and Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who were introduced as meeting for the first time in the pilot episode “Yankee White”, had a history together. Initially, it was implied they met later, but this was revised to show they’d known each other for years. A fascinating connection between them is that they both were married to Diane Sterling; Fornell wed her after Gibbs divorced her. Together, they had a daughter named Emily. Tragically, Diane was killed by a terrorist and Emily passed away years later due to an overdose.

Is there a chance we’ll see Gibbs and Fornell meet soon?
