As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say that the news of a darker turn for the beloved Enola Holmes franchise has piqued my interest. Having grown up on the original Sherlock Holmes tales and the more recent adaptations, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia coupled with excitement at the prospect of this new direction.

The eagerly awaited sequel to the beloved franchise, “Enola Holmes,” has made significant progress. The third installment of this Sherlock Holmes spin-off series is set to move forward with director Philip Barantini at the helm. Known for works like “Boiling Point” and “Accused,” Barantini is now being considered as the director for Enola’s next mystery. Moreover, it seems that “Enola Holmes 3” will introduce a twist, taking the series away from its family-friendly tone towards something more ominous or ominously titled “darker.

As reported by Deadline, while the agreements aren’t fully sealed yet concerning Barantini assuming control, it is anticipated that the lead actor will return for future roles. This speculation arises from sources who suggest that this could be her next venture once she finishes production on the final season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.

Regarding the shift in tone, it appears that the upcoming film Enola Holmes may mirror the evolution of Harry Potter by growing more mature alongside its audience. According to sources, what attracted executives and producers to Barantini’s approach was his decision to introduce a darker tone and make the story slightly more appropriate for an older audience. The filmmaker even referenced the third Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as his inspiration for how he plans to redefine Enola Holmes, aiming to create a tone that is noticeably darker compared to the initial films.

It was announced in November 2023 that a third installment in the Enola Holmes series is set, and Scott Stuber, who leads Netflix Film, shared with Collider that they are excited to work with Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things once more.

“She’s truly become an outstanding homegrown talent for us, especially with the massive success of Stranger Things. It’s amazing to see her progress as an actress and we have a movie coming up in the spring called Damsel, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. I’m really looking forward to it. Plus, we’re trying to nail the character for that film because the Holmes IP has a strange ability to stretch. Warner Bros. did an amazing job with Downey and Jude Law, so the idea of extending this intellectual property with her is thrilling. We’re currently working on a new screenplay to make it happen. In short, our goal is to create another successful project with her.

Launched in 2020, the initial “Enola Holmes” movie was adapted from Nancy Springer’s “The Enola Holmes Mysteries” book series. It brings to life the main character, Enola Holmes (portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown), who embarks on a personal mission to London to locate her vanished mother. Along the way, she inevitably finds herself tangled in another mystery that could potentially jeopardize the entire nation.

Starring Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter, the film Enola Holmes garnered favorable reviews from both critics and viewers, making it one of Netflix’s most-watched original movies. A follow-up titled Enola Holmes 2 was also well-received, maintaining its position atop Netflix’s viewership rankings in 2022. Given its success, it’s not surprising that the streaming platform is eager for more, and we’ll be curious to see how the series delves into darker themes.
