As a researcher with a keen interest in the intersection of technology and human emotions, I find myself intrigued by this unfolding saga. Mark Longo, the owner of Peanut the Squirrel, has certainly lived through an extraordinary rollercoaster of events. From the tragic euthanasia of his beloved pets to the meme coin craze that followed their internet fame, it’s a tale as complex and unpredictable as life itself.
Originally posted on X (but since removed), Mark Longo – the proprietor of Peanut the Squirrel – appears to have warned potential legal action against PNUT token holders due to alleged copyright violation, simultaneously introducing plans for his own meme-based cryptocurrency.
Following allegations that members of the PNUT community were exploiting his pet’s tale for financial gain, Mark Longo, proprietor of Peanut the Squirrel, has declared intentions to take legal action against token holders and introduced a new coin, JUSTICE, as a form of protest.
Is the future of Peanut ($PNUT) uncertain?

In a now-deleted follow-up post on X, Longo threatened legal action against PNUT holders. He accused them of profiting off his story after New York State Department of Environmental Conservation agents euthanized his pets, Peanut the squirrel and a raccoon named Fred, following an incident where Peanut bit an officer.
You’ve exploited my personal anecdote, my squirrel story, and my sentiments to amass fortune. Imagine if someone had taken advantage of your nonprofit organization without giving a substantial portion of the profits back to you. It’s unfair and unjust. Your actions are unacceptable.

Peanut’s euthanasia sparks outcry
At the end of October, enforcement agents from DEC took Peanut and Fred away from Longo’s residence because they were found to be breaking state laws regarding the keeping of wild animals. Although Longo asserted that the animals had been set free into the wild, Peanut’s repeated appearances in social media posts triggered an official raid on October 30th, as reported by The New York Times.
Sadly, on November 1st, both Peanut and Fred underwent euthanasia due to worries about rabies following a bite incident involving Peanut. Yet, subsequent testing found no evidence of the disease in either pet.
The euthanasia of Peanut, along with the debate about the DEC’s actions, ignited a broad public uproar. This event gained even more focus when Elon Musk tweeted in support of Peanut, transforming the squirrel into a symbol of liberty and excessive government intervention.
Squirrel_Dad launches his own meme coin
Following the event of euthanasia, the crypto community initiated a meme token named PNUT, inspired by the squirrel’s internet notoriety. The price of this token skyrocketed upon its listing on Binance, igniting broad curiosity and conjecture. However, it started to gradually drop in value afterward, leading some to question if it could be another example of a pump-and-dump scheme often seen in the meme coin market.
Longo, who had cultivated a dedicated fanbase around Peanut, voiced discontent over the fact that members of the Peanut (PNUT) community were leveraging his pet’s legacy for monetary benefits, without providing him with any remuneration in return.
Responding to the phenomenal popularity of PNUT, Longo introduced his own token called JUSTICE. He did this as a means to manage his story and separate himself from the PNUT community. The token garnered immediate interest, amassing a market capitalization of $13 million, with its price skyrocketing over 50,000% within 24 hours before the press deadline, according to data from DEX Screener.
