As a fervent admirer of Dawn Olivieri’s captivating acting prowess, I find her journey in the Yellowstone universe nothing short of mesmerizing. Her character Sarah Atwood, with her enigmatic allure and unwavering determination, has left an indelible mark on the series that will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
Dawn Olivieri, the actress in question, seems unfazed by her Yellowstone character’s unexpected turn of events, as it transpired quicker than many had predicted. However, had it not been for the early departure of Kevin Costner from the series during the previous season, fans might have enjoyed a few additional episodes or seasons featuring Sarah Atwood.
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, I opened up about the psychological evolution of my malevolent character’s interactions with the Dutton clan, be it in Yellowstone or its prequel show 1883. I also shared insights on how the storylines had to adapt and shift due to Mr. Costner’s departure from the series.
Olivieri stated, “I feel it was destined for me to carry on as a character in the upcoming season. Given the circumstances, I suppose the plot took a different turn. To wrap up all the loose ends and advance the story, it had to accelerate dramatically.
How Was Sarah Involved In John Dutton’s Death And Why Did She Die?
In last Sunday’s surprising episode titled “Three Fifty-Three,” the show Yellowstone delved back into the events surrounding John Dutton’s (Costner) death to unveil the truth: Sarah Atwood and Jamie Dutton (portrayed by Wes Bentley) orchestrated the hit on John. To prevent any further complications, the individuals responsible for the hit took necessary actions to protect themselves: they murdered Sarah to ensure she never discloses anything, thereby avoiding detection.
For Olivieri, who considers herself “the closer,” the moment may have seemed like a loss on paper, but she sees things a bit differently. “I don’t play characters that lose a lot of the time. … If you’re bringing me in, I’m succeeding at the thing you are giving me, I’m ruining something — the show is over! (Laughs.)”
It wasn’t intended for Sarah to meet her end,” she remarked. “That’s a tragic reality, but her actions were daring and impactful, causing quite a stir. There’s no disputing that. Whether she’s watching us from somewhere above with a chuckle, ‘I won this round’; it’s irrelevant now. However, the impression she left on this narrative and her family is undeniably profound, one of the deepest shadows cast.
Despite her abbreviated time on the program, Olivieri feels profoundly thankful. She believes the character she portrayed will be remembered significantly, perhaps even making history due to its unique events and dramatic unfolding.
It’s unusual for me not to be the most powerful person in any given setting, whether it’s with men or women. In many of my roles, I become a formidable adversary. Regardless of who I act alongside, such as Don Cheadle on House of Lies, I am chosen because I can give them a tough competition. So, why cast this character if you don’t intend to challenge her? You have to provide some strength for her to overpower.
If Sarah Atwood was known for anything, it was her ability to both give and take away in equal amounts. In time, Olivieri, she’ll most likely miss the untapped potential of Sarah and Jamie the most. “They could have made an unstoppable pair, a formidable force that would have been intimidating to go up against!” Rest assured, however: the actress will reappear within the Taylor Sheridan universe, taking on a role in the series Lioness this season.
