Tom Hanks Explores America’s Wildlife in First Trailer for NBC Docuseries ‘The Americas’

As a long-time fan who’s grown up watching Tom Hanks‘ captivating performances, I can hardly contain my excitement for his latest venture – narrating “The Americas” wildlife documentary series! Having spent countless hours in front of the screen, immersed in Hanks’ stories, it feels surreal to now have him guide me through the diverse landscapes and wildlife of the American continents.

In the debut trailer for “The Americas,” a wildlife documentary series produced by NBCUniversal and the BBC, Tom Hanks guides audiences on a journey spanning the Western Hemisphere.

The 10-episode series, “The Americas,” features an Academy Award-winning narrator carefully chosen by producers. This show utilizes advanced technology to provide viewers with a captivating exploration of ecosystems spanning North and South America. Notably, it is executive produced by Mike Gunton, with music scored by the multi-talented Hans Zimmer, who has won both Oscars and Grammys. The series will make its debut in February, premiering with consecutive episodes to kick things off.

Toby Gorman, the head of Universal Television Alternative Studio, had stated in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter that opting for Tom Hanks as the narrator was an obvious decision.

In our team discussions, we wondered who the American equivalent of renowned BBC wildlife documentarian David Attenborough might be. Our consensus was unanimous: Tom Hanks. However, we weren’t sure if he would be open to the idea. But it turned out that the concept appealed to him,” Gorman stated.

Each episode lasting an hour will explore a distinct location throughout the Americas such as the Atlantic Coast, Mexico, the Wild West, Amazon rainforest, Gulf Coast, Andes Mountains, Caribbean islands, and the West Coast. The production team disclosed to THR that they embarked on 180 expeditions covering 8,700 miles of terrain to create this show, which is reportedly the most expensive unscripted project in NBC’s history as stated by Gorman.

Producer Mike Gunton mentioned that this docuseries delves into a region of the world that hasn’t been extensively documented before, making it a thrilling endeavor for the production team.

Gunton stated that this region is known as the Americas, and what makes it thrilling is that there’s nowhere else quite like it. In fact, it’s hard to put into words just how diverse it is. As a wildlife filmmaker, you’re always searching for extraordinary sights. Although it doesn’t have elephants, it offers everything else. Essentially, we’re presenting scenes that people have never witnessed before.

The Americas premieres on NBC and Peacock on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
