As an analyst with years of experience in global economics and politics, I find Maya Parbhoe’s presidential campaign in Suriname to be nothing short of inspiring. Her bold vision for transforming her country into a Bitcoin-powered nation is not just a political stance, but a personal crusade driven by the tragic loss of her father, who was a victim of corruption.
Maya Parbhoe, running for president in Suriname, proposes a daring initiative to make her nation one of the world’s most Bitcoin-focused countries, surpassing El Salvador under President Nayib Bukele in crypto adoption. She is convinced that Bitcoin could provide solutions to challenges like corruption, joblessness, and inflation that Suriname is experiencing at present.
In a bid to combat Suriname’s widespread corruption and enhance the well-being of its people, Parbhoe – who heads Daedalus Labs, a company specializing in Bitcoin and NOSTR services – seeks to make Bitcoin the country’s primary currency.
Should Parbhoe secure victory in the 2025 election, she intends to declare Bitcoin as legal tender and transition from the Suriname dollar to Bitcoin within the initial year. Her vision encompasses paying salaries using Bitcoin, abolishing the central bank, reducing taxes, and privatizing government services.
Maya’s primary ambition lies in establishing a government that’s transparent and free from corruption, where the national budget can be traced using blockchain technology. On a deeply emotional level, her fervor for Bitcoin stems from a tragic event: her father, Winod Parbhoe, was a victim of a corruption scandal that took his life when she was only 13 years old.
He had uncovered illegal money laundering tied to Suriname’s largest bank and the Colombian FARC guerrillas. This tragedy drove Maya to fight against corruption and find a way to build a new, transparent financial system for Suriname using Bitcoin.
Over the years, she has gained substantial support from the Bitcoin community, especially after working with Samson Mow, a key figure behind El Salvador’s Bitcoin adoption.
In 2023, her attempts to establish Bitcoin as legal tender in Suriname faced obstacles due to governmental corruption. Yet, following her decision to campaign for presidency, Parbhoe aims to eradicate corruption and construct an unmanipulated economy based on Bitcoin.
Her vision strikes a chord with numerous individuals, presenting a novel and revolutionary strategy for addressing Suriname’s financial system and government issues. It remains to be seen whether her daring strategy can indeed instigate genuine transformation within the nation.
