As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I can confidently say that this Thanksgiving weekend is shaping up to be a blockbuster extravaganza! With the highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2, ready to set sail and take the box office by storm, it’s hard not to get swept away in the excitement.
As a movie connoisseur, I eagerly anticipate the clash of titans this upcoming Thanksgiving weekend as Disney’s highly anticipated sequel, Moana 2, squares off against the formidable Wicked. However, despite the fierce competition, it seems clear that Moana 2 is primed to dominate the box office, leaving audiences spellbound and craving more. As the buzz around Disney’s latest animated masterpiece continues to build, cinephiles are already marking their calendars for a holiday cinema extravaganza featuring some of the year’s most anticipated films. While Wicked has demonstrated its box office prowess earlier this month, it remains to be seen whether it can stand up against the unstoppable force that is Moana 2, which promises to shatter its own records come Thanksgiving.
Despite initial responses being varied, it appears that Moana 2 is matching its original success at the box office, with projections estimating a domestic earnings of approximately $135 million over the Thanksgiving weekend (as reported by Variety). This figure would make it the highest-grossing movie on the holiday, surpassing another Disney animated sequel, Frozen II, which earned $125 million in 2019. On the other hand, Wicked has already made $114 domestically over the previous weekend and is aiming for the second spot during the upcoming holiday. With audiences waiting for the Thanksgiving break to catch up on new releases, both Moana 2 and Wicked are poised to capitalize on this opportunity. Notably, Moana 2 is expected to set a new record during this timeframe.
Each of these upcoming films, including “Moana 2” and “Wicked”, may attract some overlapping audiences due to their musical genre, but they should both kick off strongly over the Thanksgiving weekend. On the other hand, “Gladiator II” is expected to provide an alternative option, aiming to recover its $250 million budget after earning $220 million worldwide in the past fortnight. The question remains whether “Moana 2” will manage to surpass the earnings of the original film, as initial reviews have been somewhat divided so far.
‘Moana 2’ Was Almost Not in Theaters
Initially intended for streaming on Disney+, Moana 2, which has shown potential to surpass an extraordinary Thanksgiving box office record, was originally destined for television. Although some reviews suggest that its original TV origin could have impacted the narrative’s quality, Disney strategically opted for a cinema release instead. Given its status as the most-watched film on Disney+, it appears the studio aimed to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the initial film to boost their streaming platform. Moana, which earned close to $650 million globally in 2016, might have given Disney second thoughts about making a sequel after such a long gap. However, any apprehensions about the sequel surpassing its predecessor’s success seem to have vanished as it looks set to exceed its earlier counterpart.
As the storyline for Moana 2 expanded and grew more elaborate during its creation, Disney Animation President Jennifer Lee disclosed that it seemed fitting to release the movie in a traditional theater setting rather than on Disney+.
As it continued to grow and become more grandiose, our excitement to witness it unfold on a large cinema screen intensified. It transformed in a unique way, giving off an authentic vibe…Discussing the importance of supporting movie theaters was something we often pondered upon. While we appreciate Disney+, this masterpiece seemed destined for the big screen eventually. Its narrative could be presented anywhere, but these artists craft stories they envision on the big screen and aim to share with the world in that same format.
