Mark Wahlbergs Divisive Action Thriller Shooter Lands on Streaming in December

As a seasoned cinephile who’s seen more than his fair share of action flicks, I must say that Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Shooter‘ remains a captivating and divisive gem in the genre. While it might not have been universally praised by the critics, the movie certainly struck a chord with me and many other audiences who appreciated its raw energy and Wahlberg’s unapologetic portrayal of Bob Lee Swagger.

Originally an Academy Award-nominated film, “Shooter” – released in 2007 – has recently found a new home on streaming platforms. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as a former Marine Scout Sniper who becomes the target of suspicion after being accused of murder. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, audiences adored its B-movie style, and now is an excellent opportunity to rewatch this action-packed thriller.

Bob Lee Swagger, an elite Marine sniper (played by Mark Wahlberg), steps away from military life following a disastrous operation that leaves him untraceable. Later, authorities persuade him to reemerge to prevent a dangerous plot targeting the U.S. President. As he uncovers deceit, Swagger finds himself pursued across the country. Rather than eluding his pursuers, Swagger decides to take revenge on some of the world’s most influential and corrupt figures.

Upon its premiere, the film “Shooter” sparked a significant divide between critics and viewers. This isn’t unprecedented; many movies have faced such splits before. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a lower rating of 47% from critics, indicating a disapproval that was symbolized by an unflattering green splat. Critics commented that the film’s implausible plot and numerous inconsistencies prevented it from standing out among other mindless action-thrillers. Conversely, “Shooter” was well-received by audiences, garnering an 80% score on the Popcornmeter. The charismatic portrayal of Mark Wahlberg as a tough action hero and his compelling quest for vengeance resonated strongly with fans.

Mark Wahlberg remains active in his acting career today. He recently teamed up with John Wick: Chapter 3 star and Academy Award winner Halle Berry for Netflix’s The Union. In the future, Wahlberg will rejoin his Father Stu co-star Mel Gibson for the action thriller Flight Risk, set to hit theaters on January 24, 2025. Gibson is directing a script by Jared Rosenberg, with Wahlberg playing the antagonist in this story about an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) escorting a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they fly over the Alaskan wilderness, they start to suspect that their pilot (Wahlberg) might not be who he appears to be.

In addition to “Flight Risk,” Wahlberg is also slated to appear in the crime thriller “Play Dirty,” directed by Shane Black, who is known for films like “Iron Man 3” and “The Nice Guys.” He is also set to star in the action-comedy “Balls Up,” which is helmed by Peter Farrelly, an Academy Award winner and one half of the Farrelly brothers.
