As a longtime connoisseur of the Fast & Furious franchise, I’ve witnessed the rollercoaster ride that this saga has become over the years. From the streets of Los Angeles to the farthest reaches of space, the exploits of Dominic Toretto and his family have kept me glued to my seat.
For quite some time now, the Fast & Furious series has mirrored the dizzying maneuvers of its speedy automobiles on screen. Originating in 2001, the storyline centering around Dominic Toretto and his kin has traversed locales ranging from Los Angeles’ streets to outer space. Initially, it was believed that a Hobbs & Reyes spin-off would bridge the gap between Fast X and Fast 11, serving as an interim film before the final chapter in the main series. However, as per regular franchise writer Chris Morgan, this seems unlikely at present.
As a film critic, I recently had an engaging conversation with The Hollywood Reporter regarding Dwayne Johnson’s latest blockbuster flop, “Red One” (penned by Morgan). During our chat, the topic of Johnson’s Fast & Furious franchise arose. In 2023, Johnson announced his intentions for a new Hobbs & Reyes spin-off, featuring himself and Jason Momoa. The idea was that this film would precede Fast 11, offering fans an insight into the fate of Reyes post-Fast X events, given Momoa’s absence in the upcoming movie. It’s quite a complicated plotline, I must admit. However, Morgan, in his latest statement, hinted that all these plans might be uncertain and, to get the real story, we should, as he suggested, consult “greater minds than mine.
The studio’s release plan is a topic they would need to discuss. Essentially, it involves when and in what order things will be unveiled, but I’d prefer to let more knowledgeable individuals handle those details.
It seems like the production of “Fast 11” may have begun, as per Vin Diesel’s latest update. This might lead us to believe that we now know everything there is to know about the rumored “Hobbs & Reyes” spin-off, and it won’t be coming before the final film, which is scheduled for release in 2026.
What Does All This Mean for the Future of ‘Fast & Furious?’
As someone who’s contributed to six films in the Fast & Furious series and the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off, it can get a bit confusing trying to decipher what’s truly happening with the saga’s future. The information that’s been circulating seems to contradict itself at times, leaving me uncertain about what’s fact and what might just be Johnson asserting his influence and positioning himself as the savior of the franchise.
To make things even more intriguing, Morgan also shared his enthusiasm about being part of another project linked to the Fast series, featuring Johnson. He commented, “I can share that I’m working on a script similar to Hobbs & Shaw. Let’s see where it leads, but I’m certainly looking forward to it.” However, the situation remains puzzling as the Hobbs & Reyes spin-off was announced while The Rock hinted at a delay in the Hobbs & Shaw sequel production. Quite a conundrum, isn’t it?
Frankly speaking, it’s become quite a shock, and at this stage, we’re yearning for Diesel and his team to embark on one final journey. Rumor has it that this time around, it will be more about an “American road trip” rather than the fast-paced spy missions the franchise has been known for. As for Johnson, he might as well kick up some dust because it seems like everything he’s involved with these days just ends up being a mess.
