As a fellow movie enthusiast and a child of the ’80s, I can relate to Denis Villeneuve‘s sentiments towards Star Wars. Like him, I was captivated by the original trilogy, particularly The Empire Strikes Back, which left an indelible mark on my childhood imagination.
Denis Villeneuve is detailing why he doesn’t want to direct a Star Wars film.
The Dune filmmaker says he fell out of love with the franchise a rather long, long time ago.
During an appearance on The Town podcast, Denis Villeneuve expressed his opinion that the Star Wars franchise faltered after the release of two films, specifically 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Many fans felt this film was a slight letdown compared to both 1977’s A New Hope and 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.
He shared, ‘I was the perfect audience for it. I was just ten years old. The moment I saw Star Wars, it felt like a silver bullet straight to my brain. I became utterly captivated by it.’ In fact, The Empire Strikes Back was the movie I’d been eagerly awaiting since forever. I watched it countless times on screen. It left such an impact on me that I could say I was traumatized by it. And let me tell you, my love for Star Wars is immense.’
Ever since 1983 with the release of ‘Return of the Jedi,’ things took an unexpected turn for me. I was 15 at the time, and my best friend and I were so frustrated that we even considered hopping in a cab to Los Angeles just to speak with George Lucas! To this day, I can’t help but feel irritated about the Ewoks. It turned out to be more of a kid-friendly comedy than an epic space saga. The Star Wars universe became fixed in its own mythology, rigid and formulaic, lacking any more unexpected twists. That’s why I don’t yearn for creating another Star Wars story; it feels like the code has already been written and set in stone.
And as far as Star Trek goes, Villeneuve admitted, “I’m not a Trekkie.”
The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker appeared hesitant when discussing the possibility of a third Dune installment, merely hinting at the possibility that he could take on the project. In other interviews, the director expressed his desire to concentrate on standalone movies instead of immersing himself in another series.
Villeneuve expressed his preference for not collaborating with streaming platforms such as Netflix. He explained, “The big screen is an integral aspect of storytelling, a chance for us to collectively immerse in a tale and feel the shared emotional impact of cinema within a theater.” He emphasized, “We’re not designed to be solitary; we’re meant to share experiences together… I have faith that the theater experience will continue to thrive.
