A New ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Animated Project is Coming From Netflix

As a lifelong gamer and cinema enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in various virtual worlds, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by the latest announcements from Netflix regarding their upcoming video game adaptations. The prospect of seeing the gritty, cyber-infused metropolis of Night City unfold in an animated series is nothing short of tantalizing.

It’s been confirmed by the publishers of Cyberpunk 2077 that fans can expect a new animated series in the Cyberpunk universe to be released on Netflix. The studio’s Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, hinted at a return to the futuristic city of Night City soon. CD Projekt Red has officially teamed up with Netflix for this exciting new Cyberpunk animation project, as stated by Nielubowicz himself.

I’m equally thrilled to share some exciting news! We’re currently developing another captivating animation series within the Cyberpunk universe. This upcoming production is planned for release on Netflix.

In simple terms, “Cyberpunk 2077” is an action role-playing game set in a dystopian future, where players take on the role of a mercenary named V. Developed by CD Projekt Red, this game is inspired by Mike Pondsmith’s game series. The storyline revolves around V, who unintentionally inherits the memories and actions of the legendary rockstar-turned-terrorist Johnny Silverhand, voiced by Keanu Reeves. As V navigates through the cyberpunk universe to separate himself from Silverhand’s influence and survive, a new animated project has been announced, which complements the live-action film also being produced by Netflix.

The identity of the animation studio responsible for the upcoming project remains undisclosed. Previously, Studio Trigger was behind the hit series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”. This series focused on David Martinez, a teenager navigating the criminal underworld of Night City, California. Notably, it won Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. If the new “Cyberpunk” series is to be animated in-house rather than by Studio Trigger, fans may observe a distinct animation or art style that sets it apart from its predecessor. Earlier this year, Netflix hinted at the anime project during Geeky Week. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red is engaged in multiple projects such as remaking “The Witcher 1”, working on “Witcher 4”, and developing a “Witcher” spin-off.

Video Game Adaptations Coming To Netflix

Netflix has several video game adaptations planned for the future. Following the massive success of their Arcane series, which received a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes for both seasons and is being hailed as the best video game adaptation and animated series ever made, Netflix is not stopping there. While there won’t be a third season of Arcane, other shows based on League of Legends are currently in development at the streaming platform. Co-creator Christian Linke shared that the team is brainstorming various show concepts and hinted at one project involving 3 new regions within the universe, but these shows may not be released until 2026 or 2027.

At Geeked Week in September, an adaption of the card game “Magic: The Gathering” was unveiled. This could draw in many fans of the fantasy series “Arcane” as they eagerly anticipate the next installment of League of Legends. Terry Matalas, known for his work on “Star Trek: Picard” and Marvel’s “Vision” series, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Additionally, the animated movie “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep” is set to premiere soon, exclusively on Netflix on February 11, 2025. In related news, Whats on Netflix reports that two “Assassin’s Creed” series are in development, one live-action and the second animated. Furthermore, Netflix is collaborating with 2K, Take Two, and Vertigo Entertainment on a “Bioshock” film.

Despite its immense popularity, Arcane was a costly production, with each season reportedly setting back around $250 million. This makes it the priciest animated series ever created. Given this substantial budget, the idea of launching numerous new animated shows from various franchises might be seen as bold. It will certainly be intriguing to find out which, if any, of these projects manage to air on our screens.
