As a fan who has admired Dolph Lundgren‘s unparalleled on-screen toughness for years, this latest news about his real-life triumph over cancer is nothing short of inspiring. The man who played Ivan Drago with such ferocity and determination has shown us that he possesses an equally powerful spirit off the screen.
After conquering numerous tough and lethal adversaries on screen, the Rocky and Expendables actor has shared a remarkable triumph in his personal life: he is now cancer-free. What’s truly astonishing is that this 67-year-old action star was told he had only two to three years left to live in 2020.
From his hospital room, where he underwent a procedure to eliminate suspected remaining cancer cells, the actor expressed words of encouragement and appreciation for the support he’s received since disclosing his battle in 2023. In the video, he conveyed:
“Alright, here I am [at] UCLA, about to go in and get rid of that last tumor — and, since there are no cancer cells in my body anymore, I guess I’ll be cancer-free, so I’m looking forward to this procedure. Yeah, it’s been a rough ride and really taught me how to live in the moment and enjoy every moment of life. It’s the only way to go. Alright, they’re coming to get me, see ya!”
Most recognized for his unforgettable portrayal of Ivan Drago in the Rocky series, the on-screen battles he had cannot compare to the lengthy and arduous battle he’s faced over the past nine years, largely in secrecy. Lundgren’s battle against cancer started in 2015 when doctors found a cancerous tumor in his kidney. Following the removal of the tumor, he continued working without revealing his diagnosis and surgery to anyone. In 2020, further tumors were detected during a routine examination. At that point, doctors predicted he would probably have no more than three years left to live.

Initially, Lundgren was taken aback by the diagnosis, but he wasn’t prepared to concede to it. Instead, he pursued a second opinion and swore to fight the disease with all his resources. A fresh team of doctors proposed a strategy that encompassed multiple surgeries and therapies, including the excision of a tumor approximately the size of a lemon from his liver.
It’s particularly impressive that even amidst all these challenges, Lundgren persisted with his career and obligations without a letup. Despite not putting out any films in 2020, he has made a strong comeback since 2021, releasing over a dozen new movies, such as his fourth stint in the Expendables series in 2023.
