As a seasoned Marvel fanatic with over a decade of comic book movies under my belt, I must say that the upcoming “Thunderbolts*” movie has me more than just a little intrigued. The return of Ava Starr/Ghost is a breath of fresh air, especially given her tormented state in “Ant-Man and The Wasp”.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription helped make serialized storytelling into a regular occurrence in the film world, thanks to crossover moments like The Avengers. The next upcoming Marvel movie of this nature is Thunderbolts*, which will bring together a team of villains and antiheroes from the MCU. That includes Ghost, with Hannah John-Kamen explaining a key way they’ve changed the end of Ant-Man and The Wasp. And as a fan I’m honestly relieved.
Information about Thunderbolts is somewhat scarce, but avid Marvel movie followers will likely recognize many members of the main team. Among them is Ghost, who played the antagonist in the second Ant-Man film. In an interview with The Manila Times, John-Kamen disclosed a significant alteration to her character for the sequel, stating:
Previously, she seemed like an uncontainable volcano, flaring up with distress and agony. But now, she’s found her balance, exhibiting a tranquil demeanor coupled with a resolute determination. There’s an undeniable strength in her presence, so yes, you’ll witness a transformed Ghost.
To put it simply, Ava Starr/ Ghost was suffering greatly during Ant-Man 2 due to her body yearning for Quantum Energy to sustain her ability to become intangible. This struggle fueled her antagonistic behavior and allowed viewers to connect with the new character. However, when she reappears in the Thunderbolts team, she appears to have regained control, suggesting a shift in her overall demeanor. Could it be May now?
I must admit, I’m much more eager about Ghost making a comeback these days. It would be challenging to watch her endure another film with her distinctive supernatural affliction. Yet, this opportunity will undoubtedly provide the actress with more avenues for compelling acting.
Without Ava being near death anymore, and fully mastering her powers, we can expect a significantly altered Ghost character when the Thunderbolts movie eventually premieres in theaters. Given her unique skill set among the principal cast, it’s likely that she will play a crucial role in action scenes. A hint of this was shown in the Thunderbolts trailer, where the team engages in combat and pass around using the same knife against each other.
Since the release of “Ant-Man and The Wasp” in 2018, the details surrounding Ghost’s fate have remained a mystery. It’s unclear whether she was affected by Thanos’ snap or if something else happened to her powers. Although we saw Janet helping to alleviate Ghost’s suffering at the end of the movie, the exact nature of this assistance wasn’t fully explained. Here’s hoping that “Thunderbolts” will provide some clarification on Hannah John-Kamen’s character.
The truth unfolds when the film titled “Thunderbolts*” premieres in cinemas on May 2nd. In the meantime, here are some upcoming movie releases slated for 2025.
