As a long-time devotee of cinematic masterpieces, I have witnessed the evolution of iconic franchises, and the “Alien” series is no exception. Having grown up with the original Ridley Scott-directed classic, I can attest to the sheer terror it instilled in my young mind, leaving an indelible mark that still resonates today. Fast forward to 2017, when “Alien: Covenant” graced our screens, and I found myself once again enthralled by the gripping narrative and haunting visuals.
Following the debut of “Alien: Romulus” this summer, enthusiasts of the series have been re-evaluating the older films, breathing fresh life into them as the IP gains renewed popularity. Given that Ridley Scott endorses “Romulus”, it’s logical to assume that his last two directorial contributions to the “Alien” franchise, “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant”, are receiving a lot of fresh interest. “Prometheus” functioned as a prequel to the events in “Alien”, and the 2012 film paved the way for its sequel, “Covenant”, which was released in 2017 to provide additional answers hinted at in the first film. However, one character’s ending remains uncertain, and it appears that this mystery might have been solved seven years later.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I must admit that the ending of ‘Covenant’ left me curious about the destiny of Katherine Waterston‘s character, Daniels. If I were to speculate based on my conversation with Waterston during her interview with Inverse, she seems confident that Daniels survived the encounter with Xenomorphs. She even hinted at her hope to collaborate with Ridley Scott once more on a future ‘Alien’ project, suggesting that Daniels is still very much part of this intriguing saga.
I tend to believe Daniels managed to escape from the pod, though it remains uncertain. Regardless, that world captivates me deeply. Ridley, in my opinion, is a dream come true… He’s an exceptional individual and superb collaborator. If given the chance, I’d jump at the prospect of working with him again. Even if I weren’t part of it, I’d still eagerly head to the theater to catch his latest creation.
In “Alien: Covenant,” Katherine Waterston plays the character Daniels, who serves as the chief of terraforming on a mission aboard the spaceship Covenant. She is married to James Franco’s character, Jacob Branson, who initially captained the ship, and holds the rank of third in command after Branson and Christopher Oram (portrayed by Billy Crudup), who takes over as captain when Branson is unable to continue. Towards the end of the movie, Daniels experiences a terrifying encounter with a praetomorph. However, it is later revealed that she has been deceived by Walter One (Michael Fassbender), who turns out to be David, another crew member from the Prometheus mission and an android like himself.
Following Daniels’ stasis placement, she couldn’t break free from her pod before fading unconscious. This left David to broadcast a message revealing that all crew except Daniels and Tennessee (Danny McBride) perished during a solar-flare event. He planned to utilize their deceased bodies for additional research, as he had preserved two facehugger embryos. If Ripley (Waterston) had the choice, the tale involving Fassbender’s David would carry on.
“Continue bringing David into the story, because he’s such an extraordinary character. I can tell you that with each passing year, more and more people become captivated by Covenant, and they approach me to discuss it…And as a fellow fan, I share their passion for this incredible tale.
‘Alien: Covenant’ Was Intended to Have Sequels
Upon the launch of “Alien: Covenant”, the movie garnered generally favorable opinions, with some appreciating its action-heavy approach versus the more thoughtful style of “Prometheus”. However, it also received a few criticisms for being predictable. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a score of 65%, summarizing the consensus as, “‘Alien: Covenant’ serves up another dose of nerve-wracking space terror, though it doesn’t exactly chart new territory in the saga.” Interestingly, compared to “Prometheus”, it underperformed at the box office, earning $240.9 million worldwide against a budget of $97 million, while its predecessor grossed $403.4 million globally.
Discussions about a follow-up were held throughout various phases, as “Alien: Covenant” was initially billed as the first of three further films after “Prometheus,” intended to further interlink these prequels with the original “Alien.” However, its financial performance didn’t meet expectations, causing some uncertainty about the sequel’s progression. Despite this, there were still whispers of carrying on with Ridley Scott’s vision for the sequels. Unfortunately, the sequel seemed to fizzle out, and after Disney completed their acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, it seemed like a new path would be taken.
Instead of choosing the original plan, the studio opted for “Alien: Romulus,” directed by Fede Alvarez instead. This movie turned out to be a massive hit, earning $350.9 million globally on a budget of just $80 million. Critics also appreciated it, considering it a rejuvenation for the series. Given the renewed enthusiasm for the franchise, a sequel to “Covenant” is now plausible, and rumors suggest that Ridley Scott is currently working on it.
