As a movie reviewer who has spent years dissecting the intricacies of detective dramas and medical mysteries, I must say that the upcoming CBS series ‘Watson’ has piqued my interest like no other. With Morris Chestnut taking center stage as our beloved Dr. Watson, we are finally given a chance to delve deeper into the mind of this enigmatic character.
In the upcoming CBS series titled “Watson,” the story unfolds after the demise of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, masterfully outsmarted by his longtime adversary Professor James Moriarty. The trailer below showcases Dr. John Watson, portrayed by Morris Chestnut, who is now actively assembling a team of four exceptionally intelligent physicians to function not only as doctors but also as detectives for their patients. According to the press release from CBS Entertainment, “Watson” revolves around these new detective-physicians.
Six months have passed since my dear friend and partner, Sherlock Holmes, met his tragic end at the hands of Moriarty. Now, I, Dr. John Watson, have returned to my professional roots, leading a clinic specializing in treating unique medical mysteries. Yet, it seems my past won’t let go so easily – old ties still bind me to the world of crime and intrigue.
Moriarty and Watson are all set to pen their own chapter in a story that has captivated audiences for over a century. The new tale, titled “Watson: A Medical Mystery Solver,” presents a contemporary take on one of history’s most illustrious detectives, who now focuses his keen intellect and analytical skills not on crime-solving but on unraveling medical enigmas.
Chestnut is best known for his roles in The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday, and their Peacock spin-off series, The Best Man: The Final Chapters. The Watson actor also made memorable appearances in Boys n the Hood, The Brothers, and The Resident. Craig Sweeny serves as the showrunner and executive producer on the CBS medical mystery and directed the Watson premiere.
Moriarty Will Be the “Nemesis” in ‘Watson’
Donal Finn has been chosen to play James Moriarty in the upcoming Prime Video series titled “Young Sherlock,” and this villainous character will also appear in Morris Chestnut’s new show, “Watson.” During a recent interview with Deadline, Finn confirmed that Moriarty would be Sherlock Holmes’ formidable adversary. Similarly, Chestnut discussed the emphasis on Dr. Watson rather than Sherlock by stating that his series will primarily focus on the character of Watson.
In this new take, Watson will be the central focus, drawing upon the detective skills he’s honed while working with Holmes. We can think of them as medical detectives, delving deep into cases from Watson’s unique point of view and through a medical investigation lens. This fresh approach sets it apart from previous portrayals that primarily highlighted Holmes.
The first episode of “Watson” is scheduled to broadcast on Sunday, January 26, 2025,, directly after the AFC Championship Game on CBS at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. From that date forward, new episodes will be released weekly during the show’s designated time slot on Sundays, starting from February 16 at 10 p.m. In a recent interview, Morris, who is also involved in the project as an executive producer, spoke about his role, stating:
As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: “In the hectic world of filmmaking, camaraderie and a positive work environment are essential. During my initial meeting with Craig [Sweeny], over lunch, we shared a common vision – to foster a set where the first priority is having good, genuinely nice people. Of course, we want skilled professionals, but we’re not interested in those who come with a toxic attitude.
Actors Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Ritchie Coster, Inga Schlingmann, and Rochelle Aytes join Morris Chestnut in the cast of the upcoming series. The series can be streamed the day after its premiere on Paramount+. However, those with a Paramount+ subscription that includes SHOWTIME will have the added benefit of watching the live CBS broadcast when the show airs.
