As a lifelong fan of game shows who grew up watching both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, I can’t help but find myself caught in the middle of this recent controversy surrounding the hosts of my beloved shows.
It’s no surprise that the classic game shows Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune have a dedicated fanbase who aren’t afraid to express their opinions. Whether they believe a clue on Jeopardy! was incorrect or think Wheel of Fortune needs a rule modification, viewers certainly aren’t shy about sharing their thoughts. Interestingly, this week has seen a flurry of complaints, yet surprisingly, Ryan Seacrest and the producers of Jeopardy! are both facing criticism for incidents that were exactly opposite in nature.
Ryan Seacrest Called Out For Not Helping Wheel Of Fortune Contestant
On November 26th, Tuesday, Oleh Voloshyn, a contestant on Wheel of Fortune, managed to crack the Final Spin puzzle during his round without initially guessing any letter. However, despite knowing the solution, he ended up finishing in second place, falling short of the Bonus Round by a mere $176. To win the game, all Oleh needed was to guess a single letter, which would have earned him an additional $6,000, and he would have solved the puzzle just in time.
A significant number of Reddit users felt that Ryan Seacrest should have fulfilled his duty by reminding the contestant of this fact, much like Pat Sajak frequently did in similar situations. The comments echoed this sentiment.
- Pat would have reminded him to guess a letter before solving. – andylayindustries
- If I’m Oleh, I’m upset at myself for not realizing the situation… I’m also angry at Ryan for not doing something that Pat always made a point to do in this exact situation. It’s not the host’s job to point those types of things out but Pat always tried so now we expect it. – JerseyJoeEdits
- People do this all the time, or at least try to. Pat was great at always reminding them to call another letter first though. – ExecutiveTurkey
In my viewpoint, Ryan Seacrest made a wise choice by remaining silent, as assisting one contestant would have unfairly affected another. A game show host should keep the game flowing but never sway its results, in my opinion, even if Pat Sajak may have done so. Nonetheless, it’s quite amusing to see Wheel of Fortune fans upset about a lack of help for a contestant, given that Jeopardy! was grappling with the opposite issue.
Jeopardy! Called Out For Helping Out Its Contestants Too Much
The day preceding the potential Seacrest blunder, on November 25, the TV show Jeopardy! displayed a visual hint in the category “Time For A Cocktail?”. An old black-and-white picture of Helen Gurley Brown appeared along with Ken Jennings reading out, “Helen Gurley Brown was the first female editor of this publication in the 1960s.” Adam Hersh correctly answered with “What is Cosmopolitan?”, but even without knowing the answer, it was clearly displayed on the screen for him.
To the right of Helen Gurley Brown, slightly above the object she’s holding, the word “Cosmopolitan” is clearly visible, written in white. A keen-eyed viewer of Jeopardy! was quick to notice this detail on the episode’s Reddit thread, commenting:
On previous occasions, there might have been similar instances, but the ‘Cosmopolitan’ riddle could very well be the most obvious case yet where the visual clue seems to clearly reveal the solution.
It’s clear that the viewer is correct, and I find it hard to believe that the producers purposely included that detail thinking the contestants wouldn’t spot it. In truth, when I initially watched the episode, neither I nor many other Redditors picked up on the word. Even upon rewatching, it took a close-up view for me to see it clearly. Given the distance and time constraints the players are under, I strongly doubt they could have spotted it from where they were. Nonetheless, someone did notice it, so there’s always the possibility that more may follow suit.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but jump into the ongoing discussion about Ryan Seacrest and Ken Jennings stepping up as hosts for two iconic game shows, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, respectively. They surely have some big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Pat Sajak and Alex Trebek – legends in the realm of game show hosting. I’m curious to see how they fare, so I suggest checking your local listings to find out when these beloved shows air in your area. Let’s cheer them on and witness history in the making!
