Deadpool & Wolverine Had A Line Cut For Going Way Too Far

As a lifelong fan of the Merc with a Mouth and Wolverine, I can’t help but chuckle at the shenanigans that went down during the making of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The line about Disney getting cheap was a mouthful, indeed! It seems our beloved Deadpool had no qualms pushing the envelope when it came to poking fun at the House of Mouse.

You may think the Merc with a Mouth doesn’t have a filter, but it turns out there were some lines in the sand when it came to what jokes they could get away with for “Deadpool & Wolverine.” And no, it had nothing to do with Bolivian marching powder.

Initially, Ryan Reynolds had genuine concerns about Disney taking over the production of the third “Deadpool” movie. The first two films were produced by 20th Century Fox, but a seven-year gap between “Deadpool 2” and the start of “Deadpool & Wolverine” saw Fox being bought by Disney. There was apprehension that the Deadpool franchise might suffer due to this change.

Initially, Reynolds didn’t disclose the humor behind his words, but now the company has shared the original script on their “For Your Consideration” platform during awards season, and there is indeed a joke that was removed before the final version. To be honest, it’s not difficult to understand why this joke was altered.

The line that went too far was a mouthful

The action unfolds roughly halfway through the movie, where Deadpool encounters Blade, Electra, and Gambit for the first time. Electra hints at a fourth person joining their group, prompting Deadpool to hope aloud, “Oh heavens above, I fervently pray it’s Magneto.” Upon hearing that Magneto is deceased, Deadpool reacts with an exasperated exclamation, “Darn! So now Disney can save a few bucks?

In the initial version, Deadpool makes a comment about Disney being stingy, followed by, “I find it hard to swallow all this Mickey Mouse nonsense.” It seems that even in a film brimming with similar explicit sexual humor and jabs at Disney Corporation, referencing Mickey Mouse while making such a statement was deemed inappropriate.

Shawn Levy, the co-writer and director of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” discussed the infamous joke with Entertainment Weekly in August 2024. He disclosed that this was the only line they were instructed to alter, but he also felt that Ryan Reynolds’ alternative line might not receive Disney’s approval either. If you happen to recall, it was the line, “It’s like Pinocchio shoved his face in my rear end and started lying like mad.

entertainment weekly was told by Levy that he playfully said, “That’s your standby line when asked ‘Can we tidy this up?’ Ryan Reynolds truly lives up to his reputation of being bold right to the brink.

The team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine turned into an unstoppable box office hit, and the change we made didn’t seem to affect it much. After all, many aspects of the movie were altered during production. In fact, at one point in the planning stages, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was intended to perform a musical number, and they even attempted to get Robert Downey Jr. to make a brief appearance as Iron Man. However, when those ideas didn’t pan out, they settled on Happy Hogan instead.

Ultimately, both fans and Disney were satisfied with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” as indicated by its impressive $1.3 billion global earnings. Moreover, they managed to achieve this success while steering clear of any depictions involving Mickey Mouse’s masculinity – which I suppose makes for a content ending for all parties involved.
