‘Nosferatu’ Isn’t Robert Eggers’ First Literary Adaptation

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I can confidently say that Robert Eggers is one of the most exciting and innovative filmmakers working today. His ability to breathe new life into classic tales while maintaining their timeless horror and suspense is truly remarkable.

The talented and energetic director, Robert Eggers, has solidified his status as one of Hollywood’s most captivating filmmakers, leaving moviegoers spellbound with his horror successes “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse,” as well as the gripping historical action epic “The Northman.” Anticipation is at an all-time high for the release of his highly anticipated gothic spectacle, “Nosferatu,” scheduled for a Christmas day premiere. Many are eager to see what enchantment Eggers will weave on screen in this chilling adaptation of the 1922 German silent classic.

As a dedicated cinephile, let me share some exciting news about one of my favorite storytellers – the talented Robert Eggers. While many may know him for his chilling adaptation of Bram Stoker’s horror masterpiece, they might not realize that he’s also delved into Shakespearean territory with his 2022 release, The Northman, which loosely draws inspiration from the legendary playwright’s heart-wrenching tragedy, Hamlet. Taking a trip down memory lane, Eggers’ debut in the literary world was nothing short of spectacular. His historical film, undoubtedly, lived up to expectations, delivering an exhilarating cinematic experience that left audiences spellbound.

A Gripping Historical Action Epic

Alexander Skarsgård gave an impressive performance as a ruthless Viking prince in the gripping historical action movie “The Northman“, which is loosely based on the Scandinavian tale Amleth (does it sound familiar?). The film chronicles the journey of a determined warrior who swears to track down those responsible for the gruesome killing of his father, King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke), following a treacherous betrayal by his brother Fjölnir (Claes Bang). After Amleth is hunted and forced to run away from his village as a child, he transforms into a berserker for a group of brutal Vikings and plans his revenge.

In disguise as a servant, Amleth feigns servitude to conceal his intentions for revenge against the treacherous uncle who usurped Fjölnir’s throne. As he embarks on this odyssey of vengeance, Amleth crosses paths with the captivating sorceress Olga from the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy), who guides him towards fulfilling the destiny that had been ordained for him.

Eggers’ Masterful Retelling of Shakespeare’s Classic

The movie “The Northman” is strongly influenced by the medieval Scandinavian story of Amleth, which was the main inspiration behind William Shakespeare’s legendary character Prince Hamlet in his play “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.” Written between 1599 and 1601, Shakespeare’s play takes place in Denmark. Similar to Amleth, Prince Hamlet seeks revenge on his treacherous uncle Claudius who murdered his father and usurped the throne, while also marrying Hamlet’s deceitful mother Gertrude.

Robert Eggers was inspired to make a film about Vikings after visiting Iceland, where he encountered Icelandic poet and writer Sjón. This meeting eventually led to the two collaborating on the screenplay for The Northman. Besides the tale of Amleth and Hamlet, Eggers also found inspiration in works such as Poetic Edda, Prose Edda, and Egil’s Saga (time-honored Norse literature) as well as the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian to help mold the captivating narrative. Alexander Skarsgård, who has long been intrigued by Viking folklore and its past, set the stage for him to collaborate with Eggers (and later work alongside Kidman in front of the camera again).

The movie titled “The Northman” debuted on April 22, 2022. It received extensive praise from both critics and viewers, who admired its stunning visuals, thrilling action scenes, and Skarsgård’s remarkable portrayal of a man determined to seek vengeance for his father and accomplish his fate. Although it didn’t perform well at the box office, it achieved significant success through streaming and home release, and was recognized with several nominations such as two Critics’ Choice Super Awards and a Saturn Award for Best Thriller Film.

Fans Anxiously Await the Debut of ‘Nosferatu’

Director Robert Eggers is well-versed in creating chilling narratives filled with dread and suspense, having directed the unsettling movies “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse“. He’s also demonstrated exceptional skill in bringing literature to life after the success of “The Northman“. Now, this gifted filmmaker is aiming for another classic: “Nosferatu“, a groundbreaking 1922 German silent movie that was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s renowned horror novel “Dracula“. This timeless tale continues to instill fear in audiences even today.

In a forthcoming gothic horror remake titled “Nosferatu“, Bill Skarsgård will portray the chilling vampire character, leaving audiences spellbound. His love interest, the young and radiant Ellen Hunter, is played by Lily-Rose Depp. This eagerly awaited adaptation boasts a star-studded cast that includes Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Skarsgård went the extra mile in his preparation for this role, working with an opera singer to deepen his voice and spending six hours every day in makeup to undergo his spine-tingling transformation. On the demanding process, Skarsgård commented: “It was a truly eerie experience…

“It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me.”
