As a die-hard Yellowstone fan, I must say that Season 5B has been a rollercoaster of emotions, with heart-wrenching moments that have left me breathless and teary-eyed. The demise of Colby, played by Denim Richards, was one such moment that struck a chord deep within me.
Spoilers below for the latest episode of Yellowstone, so be warned if you haven’t yet watched.
In every season of Yellowstone created by Taylor Sheridan and his team, there’s no lack of violence. However, the second half of Season 5 has been exceptionally violent, with numerous character deaths. From the cold-blooded murder of John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, in the midseason premiere to the shocking street assassination of Sarah, portrayed by Dawn Olivieri, and most recently, the gruesome death of Colby, played by Denim Richards. It’s a tough life for cowboys and lawyers alike on this ranch.
After the unexpected events in “Counting Coup,” Richard shared a poignant photo on social media of Colby’s cowboy attire, reflecting on the tragic end of his character during the tightly-kept secrets of Season 5B. In an interview with Variety, the actor was questioned if he sat back and enjoyed the episode like numerous other viewers, to which he responded by explaining why watching it wasn’t part of his experience.
Instead of saying “I did not,” you could say “I didn’t see it at all.” Later, you mentioned watching clips of it, but you’ve been constantly revisiting that moment since May, and it has been a deeply emotional experience for you personally to deal with it.
It seems clear that a good deal of truth is woven into those statements, given Denim Richards hasn’t said much about the show in half a year or so. The anticipation for Yellowstone‘s comeback was immense, with numerous discussions and theories swirling around these potential last episodes. It’s plausible that he had to maintain focus on Colby’s death to prevent any accidental spoilers.
Speaking up, I shared my emotions as I rewatched the scene from that episode where I sacrificed myself on a horse to protect Carter. To express it in my own words: “I couldn’t help but feel a mix of regret for not being able to save myself and pride for doing what needed to be done for him.
Upon viewing it, I noticed how gracefully Taylor assembled everything, making for a fitting farewell if one was to depart. However, I approached the situation as just another day on the job. It felt like a trial of endurance for me. If you aim to accomplish such tasks and hope to have a prolonged career, you’ll likely experience one or two more challenges like this. Consequently, it’s essential to maintain a degree of professionalism and elegance in such situations, which is what I’m striving to achieve right now. Otherwise, I would likely be emotional during every interview.
Actors find it best not to become excessively emotional about their character’s demise, given that such an outcome is relatively common, particularly in serial TV shows. Constantly viewing each death as a significant tragedy can become emotionally draining in the long run.
How Fan Responses To Colby’s Death Surprised Denim Richards
According to Richard, one factor that made him hesitant to share more of his on-screen experiences with the show’s audience was the overwhelmingly positive responses he received about his character’s romantic entanglements with Jennifer Landon’s character, Teeter. In his own words:
There was a great deal of anticipation surrounding this season, with many people expressing their hopes that Colby and Teeter would finally come together. Yesterday’s event felt overwhelming to me initially, but when I logged online and saw the multitude of reactions, I realized that it truly resonated with a lot of people.
Undeniably, there were many fans, including myself, who felt deeply saddened by Colby’s demise, particularly because it seemed to have torn apart his relationship with Teeter, leaving behind painful memories of their last conversation and the way Ryan delivered the news while on horseback. It’s no wonder that such emotional outpourings online might make him hesitant to engage on social media.
Fortunately, Denim Richards decided to explore online reactions, and apparently found himself surprised by the outpouring of kindness and goodwill from viewers. It must have been an unusual yet fantastic and motivating experience for him, realizing that his portrayal of this character had such a profound impact on so many people. The bunkhouse will surely miss his presence.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel the anticipation building as we approach the penultimate two episodes of Season 5, airing every Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET on Paramount Network. The thought that Season 6 might come to fruition fills me with hope, but it’s hard not to mourn the possible absence of Colby from any future storylines.
