As a film enthusiast with a penchant for spotting rising stars and a keen eye for quality productions, I am genuinely excited about the future projects of Anya Taylor-Joy. Fresh off her stint as Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road’s spinoff, she has proven her versatility yet again by signing up for Apple TV+’s Lucky and Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge.
After gracing screens in the 2021 film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Anya Taylor-Joy has been selected to lead the cast in Apple TV+’s upcoming thriller, titled “Lucky.” This series is adapted from Marissa Stapley’s bestselling novel of the same name. In May, Taylor-Joy portrayed Imperator Furiosa in the George Miller production, although it fell short of expectations, earning $173 million at the box office with a budget of $168 million.
Despite a high stock, Taylor-Joy’s reputation remains strong due to several successful projects in recent times, such as “The Menu”, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, and a small role in “Dune: Part 2”. Notably, The Hollywood Reporter has mentioned that she will also be an executive producer on the upcoming thriller “Lucky”, which will be produced alongside Reese Witherspoon through her Hello Sunshine label. This project, created by Jonathan Tropper (“Banshee”, “See”), will see him serving as co-showrunner with Cassie Pappas (“Silo”, “Griselda”).
Taylor-Joy expressed her excitement about joining ‘Hello Sunshine’ and collaborating with Jonathan, Cassie, and Apple TV+ to develop the series ‘Lucky’. In a statement, she said, ‘I’m delighted to be part of this team.’ The show revolves around Taylor-Joy’s character, Lucky Armstrong, a seasoned swindler who aims to break free from her past. However, an unexpected turn of events occurs when she impulsively buys a lottery ticket, discovering it’s worth millions. The catch? Cashing it in would lead to her arrest for her previous offenses.
Anya Taylor-Joy Teams With Scott Derrickson for Next Year’s ‘The Gorge’
Information about when “Lucky” will start production hasn’t been released yet, but it’s worth mentioning that this is indeed the second project for Apple TV+ by Anya Taylor-Joy. Apart from the upcoming thriller series, she’ll also appear in the survival action film “The Gorge,” set to release next year. This movie will also feature Sigourney Weaver, Miles Teller, and William Houston.
In the direction of Scott Derrickson (known for Sinister and The Black Phone), The Gorge unfolds as a narrative about two top-tier snipers assigned to secure opposite sides of a steep, inaccessible ravine, unaware of the secrets hidden below them. This film marks Derrickson’s first project following the triumph of The Black Phone from 2022, which was a massive success for Blumhouse, generating over $161 million at the box office while only requiring an initial investment of $18 million.
As for the premiere date, it hasn’t been announced yet for “The Gorge”, but we can expect its launch sometime in 2025, together with “The Black Phone 2”. At this moment, filming is ongoing in Toronto, Canada. Although specifics about the storyline are being kept confidential, Derrickson’s sequel will feature Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Jeremy Davies reprising their characters from the original film.
Concerning Taylor-Joy, aside from her roles in “Lucky” and “The Gorge,” she’s also slated to appear in the action-comedy “Sacrifice,” sharing the screen with Chris Evans and Salma Hayek. In this film, she will embody the character of Joan, a fervent individual on a quest to prevent the world from impending doom. At present, there’s no confirmed release date since filming commenced merely last month.
