As a long-time Disney enthusiast who has grown up with the magical tales of its beloved princesses, I can honestly say that Moana 2 has become a breath of fresh air in the realm of animated sequels. Witnessing Moana’s journey from a youthful teenager to a mature young woman is not only captivating but also deeply meaningful, as Auli’i Cravalho, the voice behind our favorite heroine, shared with us during her interview.

For the first time in Disney’s history, a Disney princess is given the opportunity to grow older along with her character. When I was initially cast, I was only 14 years old. Now, as I celebrate my 24th birthday tomorrow, I’ve spent a full decade playing this role. Naturally, my voice has matured over time as I too have aged. Reflecting on it, I remember recording the film when I was just 15, and it was released when I turned 16.
For Auli’i Cravalho, playing Moana has been an exciting journey spanning over a decade. She was one of many aspiring actresses picked for the part among hundreds of others. Looking back, she remembers every step of the way, such as when her mom made a playful comment upon meeting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. However, her voice has undergone noticeable changes since she first voiced the character. As she went on to say:
But, I’ve also done multiple records for firework shows and for Disney on Ice and Disney Lego Princess. And I always pitch my voice back up and I was wondering for this sequel, if I would have to do the same for the entirety of an hour and 30 minute long movie. But they allowed me to keep my voice in its natural register. I feel like we see her growth not only through my voice, but also through storyline and through music as well. And, it’s so nice to see women age.
Since her role as Moana in the movie, Auli’i Cravalho has consistently lent her voice to various Disney tie-ins. She mentioned that over time she tends to raise her vocal register to sound like she did when she was a teenager. However, for the upcoming Moana 2, where the character is now 19 instead of 16, she was given the chance to stay authentic to her evolved vocal range and speak in her true voice. She highlighted during our interview that this is a unique instance where a female Disney character ages between films, which holds significant meaning for her.
In my conversation with the actress, I found it moving to compare the original Moana character with her portrayal in the sequel, as I noticed a maturation and growth in her voice. As a dedicated Disney fan who cherished the Disney Princesses since childhood, it’s rare to see them age realistically, even in follow-up stories.
