As a die-hard fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the lore of Middle-earth, I can hardly contain my excitement for Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The recent updates from the showrunners, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, have sent a thrill down my spine. Knowing that they’ve been crafting the scripts with such dedication, even spending hours on a plane to do so, is truly heartening.
Fans have eagerly anticipated Season 3 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” since its dramatic finale, and recently, there’s been some news regarding its status. In the latest season, we saw Sauron (played by Charlie Vickers) set his plan to control Middle-earth into motion, manipulating those who oppose him in the crafting of the fabled rings. Despite some mixed reviews, it appears that Amazon is hopeful for another season renewal. The creators behind “The Rings of Power” have finally provided fans with an update on Season 3.
This week in Los Angeles, the team behind The Rings of Power, including producers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, hosted a Q&A session for the upcoming second season (via @RingsofPowerEra). During this event, they discussed the progress on Season 3. Notably, Payne shared that he had recently used nearly all of his 13-hour flight to draft the script for the new season. In addition, McKay mentioned that they have figured out the plot for Season 3 and are now busy writing it down.
“We’re really excited. We have a story. We think it’s really strong…and we’re working on it.”
It’s intriguing how they’re carrying on as if “The Rings of Power” had already been renewed for another season, even though there’s no official announcement yet. It’s common for production work on a new season to continue while waiting for the official green light, especially for a large-scale series like this one that requires careful planning and preparation ahead of time. It seems Amazon might be waiting to review completed scripts before making an official announcement about another season. However, it is somewhat surprising given there’s no confirmation from the studio themselves yet.
‘The Rings of Power’ Season 3 Still Not Officially Greenlit
While it’s encouraging to know that the creators of The Rings of Power are already working on scripts for Season 3, the absence of an official confirmation is a bit disquieting. Previous reports suggested that the development for the next season had started even before the Season 2 finale. However, fans are eagerly awaiting an update from the streaming platform, Amazon Prime Video, which typically informs its viewers about upcoming seasons in advance, sometimes even before a show premieres. It’s plausible that the budget of The Rings of Power might be causing the studio to hesitate about renewing the series, as while Season 2 was well-received, it didn’t necessarily win over all skeptics.
From its inception, it’s been planned as a five-season journey for Amazon’s “The Rings of Power”. Signals suggest this plan remains intact, particularly given how the Season 2 finale hinted at the series’ ultimate climax. The grandiose production is orchestrating what could be the most epic battle ever depicted on a small screen, and one deeply connected to Peter Jackson’s original trilogy’s opening in “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
