'The Madness' Continues Netflix Streaming Success for Colman Domingo

As a seasoned movie-lover and critic with over three decades of watching every genre under the sun, I can confidently say that “The Madness” is a rollercoaster ride of intrigue, suspense, and political intrigue that has left me both exhilarated and puzzled. The series, led by the exceptional talent of Domingo, undeniably delivers on its promise to immerse viewers in a labyrinth of corruption and deceit, while also exploring the personal struggles of its protagonist.

2024 has seen one successful series after another for this streaming platform, and as the year winds down, there’s a new “standout series of the year” for viewers to devour. After premiering on November 28th, this show has been ruling the streamer’s TV rankings. Despite a mix of reviews from critics before its premiere, it hasn’t deterred audiences from binge-watching the lead actor’s conspiracy thriller in massive numbers… if only they would give it some appreciation on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the eyes of many, this show has been hailed as a “masterpiece,” and it’s no wonder why it remains number one on Netflix. It offers a blend of elements that viewers seem to crave more and more. The series The Madness introduces us to Muncie Daniels, portrayed by Domingo, who is a media personality unintentionally implicated in murder. As he embarks on a perilous journey to prove his innocence, he finds himself ensnared in the anticipated complexities of political intrigue, deceit, and corruption. To make matters worse, he faces personal challenges as he tries to reconnect with his distant family. This storyline fits squarely within a genre that never fails to captivate us, regardless of how frequently we see similar themes repeated.

Regarding its skyrocketing fame, The Madness garnered quite diverse opinions from critics. Some likened it to timeless films such as The Fugitive, while others argued that despite a promising beginning, the series lost momentum and slid into overused genre patterns. Criticisms included issues with pacing, complicated plot twists, and a 64% Tomatometer score upon its debut. However, subsequent positive reviews have boosted this to 74%, a significant improvement compared to general audience opinions.

‘The Madness’ Has a Rotten Score but Huge Viewership

Similar to numerous Netflix series that have garnered a large following, my favorite show, “The Madness,” now finds itself among the ranks of shows that spark intense debate among viewers. The allure of these Netflix productions lies in their unique ability to be either passionately loved or fiercely criticized, making them a distinctive feature of streaming entertainment.

Over the past few years, films like “Red Notice” have achieved massive viewership numbers but received poor reviews from both critics and viewers. Shows such as “Emily in Paris” have generated numerous seasons with impressive viewer counts, despite being heavily criticized by a significant portion of its audience. Similarly, “The Madness” has also faced criticism.

The show’s Popcornmeter score is only at 47%, primarily due to viewer criticism about inconsistencies in plot, illogical character actions, and excessive length. Some find its political leanings in delivering thrills controversial, causing a divide among those who disagree with its messages. Conversely, those rating it “fresh” have enthusiastically praised it as one of the top limited series of 2024.

Despite all that’s happening, The series is undeniably meeting Netflix’s requirements by drawing a substantial audience. So, the question remains: Will there be a second season? While the final decision lies with Netflix’s algorithm, creator Domingo has expressed his readiness to reprise his role. Given the show’s current success, it would be challenging to dismiss the possibility of The Madness making another appearance.
