As a film enthusiast who has had the privilege of witnessing some of the greatest performances in the horror genre, it is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to Tony Todd. His passing on Nov. 4 marked the end of an era, not just for horror fans, but for anyone who appreciated the art of storytelling and acting.
On November 4th, the cinematic world suffered a significant loss as Tony Todd, one of its greats, passed away. Though he was predominantly associated with horror films, Todd’s career spanned across various platforms including theatre, audio dramas, and video games. During his journey, he earned the respect of his peers as one of the most kind-hearted individuals you could ever encounter. This sentiment was echoed by Virginia Madsen, his co-star in “Candyman,” who penned a heartfelt tribute to her late friend on what would have been his 70th birthday.
No Thanks, Keep Reading
On December 4, Madsen opened up to Variety about the impact Todd had on her. She reminisced about their initial encounter, which occurred over lunch, prior to the cameras rolling for their iconic 1992 horror classic, “The Forbidden,” that was adapted from Clive Barker’s story. In her own words, she said, “I first became acquainted with Tony at a lunch gathering.” She further mentioned that she joined the cast opposite Todd after the director’s wife fell ill.
Initially, I was cast as Bernadette, Helen’s friend. Bernard’s wife, Alexandra Pigg, was supposed to play Helen. However, she became pregnant and they decided the role would be too demanding for her, so I took over as Helen. This lunch might have been a way for us to test our on-screen chemistry, or perhaps it was just a casual meeting since we were going to share many challenges together. He entered the room, towering with good looks, flashing a captivating smile… and he was incredibly kind. He could have overlooked me as a novice actress, but from the beginning, he treated me as an equal.
She subsequently related an incident underscoring Todd’s humor, then returned to the topic of Candyman. Remarkably, she drew a parallel between the film’s tragic romance and her own lasting friendship with Todd, noting that such connections are not common in Hollywood.
One factor that makes Candyman particularly potent is the deep affection and concern people have for the characters. They become engrossed in the narrative, making it their own. In a sense, our friendship could be likened to a unique love story. To begin a relationship with someone you admire and value greatly, and then maintain that connection over the years – such an occurrence is relatively uncommon within this industry.
Virginia Madsen Calls Tony Todd a “Beautiful Human Being”
As a follower of Todd on social media, one aspect that immediately caught my attention was how unlike his brooding movie roles he seemed in real life. Instead of posting cryptic messages or eerie photos, he frequently shared his passions such as favorite recipes, music, sports highlights, and, needless to say, snaps of his cherished cats, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Mango.
If you had the chance to interact with him personally, you would have been touched by his warmth and generosity, and how attentive he was when you were talking, making you feel like he truly valued your words. This writer was fortunate enough to encounter and converse with Todd on multiple instances, and was struck not only by his humble nature, but also by his ability to put one at ease with a simple smile. This sentiment was shared by many of his fans, as Madsen highlighted in her tribute.
At conventions, there’d be moments when I’d witness the crowd seeing him, erupt into screams, and flee in panic. Yet, he always found amusement in it. He had a unique affection for his fans that not everyone shares, and he was always eager to oblige by posing with them and their props. After speaking with him, people would consistently comment, “What an incredible individual!
Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Todd significantly impacted countless lives during his time on earth and will be deeply missed. He was more than just an actor; he was one of the kindest, most genuine, and honest individuals you could ever encounter. While we mourn the loss of such an iconic figure, it’s comforting to believe that heaven now has a new guardian angel in Todd.
