As a lifelong gamer and movie aficionado who has spent countless hours debating the merits of director’s cuts with fellow film enthusiasts, I wholeheartedly support David Ayer‘s quest to release his own vision for Suicide Squad. The idea that studio meddling can significantly alter a filmmaker’s original intent is not new to me. It’s like when you spend hours crafting the perfect character in an RPG, only to have it get nerfed by the game developers.
Filmmaker David Ayer openly expresses his desire for his unique version of Suicide Squad to someday be released to the public.
Yesterday, the filmmaker who has consistently advocated for the release of an extended version of his 2016 Suicide Squad movie on Warner Bros., shared a fan-made graphic hinting at the potential unveiling of his original concept for the film on social media platforms. The Suicide Squad revolves around a group of DC Comics villains, with Will Smith portraying Deadshot, Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
One day, I’m eager for my genuine movie to be made public,” Ayer expressed on X (previously known as Twitter), accompanied by an image. “Your ongoing support and curiosity mean a lot to me.” He also included the hashtag “#FreeTheAyerVersion”.
When someone on social media stated that Ayer wouldn’t need to reveal his own version if the original movie was powerful enough by itself, the filmmaker countered, “The optimal version has yet to be viewed. I understand it might be hard for those not in the industry to grasp how drastically different two cuts of a film can be. If you find yourself disliking what’s been shown so far, this is your chance to see my true vision and make an informed judgment after seeing everything.
Last year, who was in charge of the Jason Statham action film titled “The Beekeeper”, expressed uncertainty about whether Warner Bros. or the current leaders of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, would agree to release his version of “Suicide Squad”. It’s worth noting that Gunn himself directed the 2021 sequel “The Suicide Squad”, featuring returns from Robbie, Kinnaman, and Davis, along with newcomers Idris Elba and John Cena.
To be honest, I’m unsure if WB will ever release my version,” Ayer stated. “Ultimately, I must trust James and the studio to handle it as they see best. It’s not within my control. I simply think it would be enjoyable for those interested in watching, to see my edit. If it doesn’t appeal to you, I completely understand. We all have unique preferences and tastes.
Later, Ayer replied to a user who mentioned that his cut might not be released since it’s been so long since the original film. “If it comes out, great!” Ayer wrote. “If not, no worries. It’s not a big deal. You should still get to see it and make your own opinion about it. If it’s not your thing, that’s okay too.
Yesterday, Ayer might be anticipating his movie will resemble the style of the 2017 “Justice League” film, which was initially directed by Zack Snyder but later finished by Joss Whedon following Snyder’s departure. After a fan campaign using the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, HBO Max released an extended version of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” in 2021, running for four hours.
The movie titled Suicide Squad grossed approximately $749 million worldwide, but was generally viewed as a letdown by viewers and has a 26% approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. In his critique for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Todd McCarthy stated that the film is part satire of popular genres, part gritty noir striving to be as raw as Deadpool but held back by its PG-13 rating, and part unsuccessful effort by Warner Bros. to create a successful DC Comics ensemble. The movie initially shows potential, but ultimately loses creative direction.
