As a fan who has admired Barbie Ferreira‘s exceptional performance as Kat Hernandez in Euphoria, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about her departure from the show. Her raw and authentic portrayal of Kat was a breath of fresh air that resonated deeply with millions of viewers worldwide.
Actress Barbie Ferreira, renowned for her role as Kat Hernandez in the hit TV series “Euphoria,” shares insights about the factors that inspired her portrayal of the character on the Emmy-winning show.
The actress had a chat with People magazine regarding her impending performance in the Broadway production ‘Cult of Love’, starring alongside Shailene Woodley and Zachary Quinto. In this interview, Ferreira reminisced about her tenure on the show following the announcement she wouldn’t be continuing for season three. She expressed that being part of the series at a young age enabled her to incorporate her own life experiences into the character.
At age 21, I shared a great deal of my personal vulnerability and journey of self-discovery regarding my sexuality,” she shared with the publication. “Since it wasn’t long ago since I was in high school, these feelings were still quite raw and authentic. It allowed me to draw upon my own experiences extensively. I’m content that it came across genuinely.
Although she didn’t take on the character of Kat again, she imagines where that significant character might be now in her own mind.
Ferreira stated, ‘I’m 27 years old, so she must be around 22. Most likely, she’s in college, enjoying her youth. I’d like to think she’s not overly restless.’ Ferreira cares deeply about Kat.
Reflecting on snagging the role in Sam Levinson’s HBO series, I can’t help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. It was, essentially, my debut as a substantial actor, having only dabbled in guest appearances before. This project was pivotal in shaping me into the actor I am today and kick-started an exciting career. The character I portrayed was not just dynamic, but deeply meaningful to countless fans. This role holds a special place in my heart, and I hope I did it the justice it deserved.
Ferreira shared in April 2023, during an episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, that she parted ways with Euphoria last August. This departure, she explained, was a joint choice made between herself and the show’s creator, following some creative differences during season two production.
The actress stated that she felt there were no suitable options for her character in the series at the time. She believed that while alternatives may have existed, they wouldn’t have aligned with the show’s narrative. She wasn’t certain if it would have been fair to her character. Moreover, both parties seemed to understand this. Personally, she didn’t wish to portray the stereotypical ‘fat friend.’ And I believe the creators shared that sentiment too.
She mentioned that if the necessary material were available, she would have carried on playing Kat indefinitely as long as she was requested, but the size of the ensemble, Levinson’s preferred writing topics, and her creative ideas for the character made things excessively challenging.
The actress expressed that it seemed like a challenging situation for everyone involved. She found it difficult to continue the character, and it was painful to watch and witness the fans’ disappointment. She admitted that she may have stayed too long in the role. Consequently, she felt relieved not to concern herself with this anymore because Sam typically writes about things he connects with. I believe he doesn’t relate to the character Kat, but I do. Therefore, I had to follow my own course.
Following a significant pause and the cast members, such as Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Colman Domingo, being urged to explore alternative projects, the production of Euphoria season three is at last scheduled to commence in January.
