As a long-time cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of many iconic characters, I must say that the recent revelations about Ryan Reynolds‘ rejected ideas for Disney projects have left me both amused and intrigued. The idea of Deadpool teaming up with Wolverine in a “Rashomon” style film was an exciting prospect, but the thought of him crossing paths with Bambi’s mother’s killer is something I never saw coming!
It was demonstrated that Reynolds and Disney could create magic, but it appears not all of his ideas are well-received. During an interview with Variety’s Actors on Actors alongside Andrew Garfield, Reynolds disclosed a film concept he proposed to Disney, which did not resonate at their studio.
In my own words, I recall that when it came to figuring out the ideal project for introducing Deadpool into the Disney realm, there were apparently other brainstorms from Reynolds, such as an unanticipated team-up with a charming deer. Here’s a snippet of what our discussion might have sounded like:
AS A MOVIE ENTHUSIAST, I’D RECALL: Five years ago, I floated an idea to Marvel and Kevin Feige about a Deadpool-Wolverine movie. It was reminiscent of “Rashomon,” where the narrative would switch between Deadpool’s viewpoint, mine, and an objective one. Unfortunately, they weren’t on board at the time. So, in true Ryan Reynolds fashion, I proposed some rather outlandish ideas instead – like a Sundance-style film with no special effects or conflicts, and another two-hander involving me and the infamous hunter who took Bambi’s mother. Guess what they said? “We don’t touch Bambi, Ryan.
GARFIELD: It’s weird that you’re the first person to have pitched this.
The idea of Reynolds’ Wade Wilson sidling up beside Bambi’s mother’s killer could certainly have produced a unique movie, but this is Disney at the end of the day, and even though Deadpool & Wolverine managed to get away with a lot this past summer, it seems there was a line that could not be crossed under any circumstances.
Bambi Will Be Destroyed in an Upcoming Movie Regardless
Despite Disney forbidding anyone to handle their interpretation of “Bambi“, unfortunately for Bambi enthusiasts, the original novel that inspired the movie, Felix Salten’s 1922 book “Bambi: A Life in the Woods“, falls under public domain. This classic will soon experience a unique take as part of Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s twisted adaptation series called Twisted Childhood, and unfortunately, Disney has no control over this new version.
Titled “Bambi: The Reckoning“, this upcoming film is set to hit theaters in February 2025. In it, a matured and mutated Bambi takes on the role of a vengeful stalker, targeting a mother and son, as he seeks retribution for the loss of his own mother. Similar to other productions by Jagged Edge Productions, such as “Pinocchio: Unstrung” and “Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare“, this low-budget film is expected to eventually join the “Avengers-style” cinematic universe titled “Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble.
It’s clear that whatever project Ryan Reynolds had in mind for a large budget at Disney would not have been more peculiar or unsettling than what’s coming up with Bambi: The Reckoning. Despite this being a very loose interpretation of the novel and not the 1942 animated Disney classic, the upcoming movie is bound to shatter the innocent image of Bambi and his woodland companions beyond recognition. Maybe Disney should have given Reynolds free rein to handle it like Deadpool and call it a day.
