As a long-time enthusiast of the NCIS series, I must say that this season has been nothing short of intriguing with the Alden Parker mystery unfolding. The return of Dr. Grace Confalone added another layer to the storyline, and I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia every time she appears on screen, reminding me of the good old days with Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Out of Control” are ahead!
In the Season 21 finale of NCIS, Gary Cole’s character Alden Parker suffered severe injuries and was left bleeding alongside Katrina Law’s Jessica Knight inside an abandoned ship. During this harrowing ordeal, he experienced a peculiar vision featuring himself as a child, his mother, and a girl named Lily. Before the Season 22 premiere, slated for the 2024 TV schedule, co-showrunner Steve D. Binder disclosed that Parker remains unaware of Lily’s identity, a fact that was admitted in tonight’s episode titled “Out of Control”. One of NCIS’ beloved recurring characters resurfaced to assist Parker as he began seeing Lily in everyday situations. However, the mystery surrounding Lily only deepened by the end of the episode.
Dr. Grace Confalone Came To Help Alden Parker
Lauren San Giacomo has been portraying Dr. Grace Confalone on NCIS since Season 13, joining the cast as a therapist and friend for Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Now, other key characters seek her counseling and psychological evaluations, with Grace appearing in all but one season – Season 21, which had only ten episodes due to writers and actors strikes. San Giacomo returned to the role of Grace in “Out of Control”, helping Parker untangle the enigma surrounding Lily.
As the team delved into an investigation regarding drivers who had their cars hijacked and transported to isolated spots for murder, Parker began seeing Lily in his waking moments instead of merely reliving repeated visions during sleep. The situation escalated so much that while Parker was driving with Nick Torres and Jessica Knight as passengers, he almost caused a car accident due to being preoccupied by the sight of Lily on the roadside. Knight had already been worried about Parker, but he’d insisted everything was okay. However, after the in-car incident, it became evident that he required professional assistance.
In the first person, I recall my encounter with Dr. Grace, first at his apartment and later at the Navy Yard. During our conversation, I shared with her that after my injury in Season 21, I thought my meeting with Lily was merely a fever dream due to blood loss. However, it’s evident now that wasn’t the case. I confessed to Grace that I’m completely clueless about who Lily is, even asking my father if there’s anyone named Lily in our family. Clearly, this enigma won’t be unraveled in a single session or even two, but at least I have Dr. Grace to assist me in navigating this peculiar situation. Yet, by the end of the episode, we were left with more questions than answers.

There Are New Layers To Alden Parker’s Lily Visions And Past
When Alden Parker began discussing the elements of the NCIS Season 21 finale’s vision he had, Dr. Grace Confalone zeroed in on the detail that his mother was present alongside Lily. Upon questioning about this woman, Parker revealed that his mother passed away when he was young, a short time after she left their home due to frequent arguments between her and his father. However, when Grace later suggested that Parker’s mother might have appeared as a guiding or protective figure in his vision because of the advice “watch the rope,” it irritated Parker that the therapist continued to bring up his deceased mother.
During the session, Dr. Grace found that Parker eventually settled down and admitted he harbored some lingering issues related to his mother. He mentioned these concerns would be addressed at a later time, instead asking Dr. Grace to concentrate on Lily for now. Dr. Grace consented, opening up the possibility of delving into Parker’s complex relationship with his mother in the future. The intriguing question arises: What is it about his mother that makes Parker hesitant to discuss her, and what events led to her leaving him and his father? It’s worth considering the possibility—though highly speculative—that Parker’s mother may still be alive.

As a gamer, I never thought a show could draw me in so deeply, but back then when I first heard about NCIS, it was like stepping into an immersive game. It’s strange to think that this experience is what eventually led me down the path of joining the team years ago.
Executive Producer of NCIS reveals the confidentiality that was essential when planning to reintroduce Cote de Pablo, which is akin to adhering to an unwritten code of secrecy, much like the clandestine rules in Fight Club.
In an unexpected twist, Lily’s enigma became even more puzzling. After resolving the main case in “Out of Control,” Alden Parker, on his way out of NCIS headquarters, spotted Lily sitting at a table nearby, scribbling on a piece of paper. Instead of feeling alarmed by her presence, he followed Dr. Grace’s advice and chose to approach her more amicably, calling out her name. This action caused Lily to flee, and when Parker approached the table where she had been writing, he found a note that read, “Don’t tell anyone.” Interestingly, as the episode concluded, Gary Cole’s character was merely standing by the table, holding no paper.
The puzzle surrounding Lily has become even more intricate, as we’re no nearer to discovering her true identity and now there’s this cryptic note she left behind. Is Alden Parker getting some sort of hint from this? Could Lily be instructing him not to bring her up with Dr. Grace anymore? Or is this message tied to a forgotten memory from Parker’s past? This tale is indeed peculiar even by the standards of NCIS, but then again, this show has had its share of unusual events like Leroy Jethro Gibbs still seeing his deceased mentor Mike Franks as a ghost after Season 8. So, it seems everything is subjective in this series.
Hopefully, we’ll get some solid solutions to this mystery on NCIS in Season 22 sooner as opposed to later. Don’t forget to watch it every Monday at 9 pm ET on CBS, and afterward, stream fresh episodes with a Paramount+ subscription. Additionally, that’s where you can catch up on all the other NCIS series, and it will also be the only place to enjoy the upcoming spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
