Monument Valley 3 review - "Gentle story, fantastic puzzles"

  • Subtle story to follow, full of hope
  • Levels that challenge the way you think
  • You can drive a boat

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for intricate puzzles and heartwarming narratives, Monument Valley 3 has left me utterly captivated. Having journeyed through the first two installments, I was eager to see how Ustwo Studios would elevate this beloved franchise, and boy, did they deliver!

Monument Valley has been extremely successful, particularly its first two installments that significantly shook up the puzzle genre in a favorable manner. With high anticipation surrounding a third game in the series, Monument Valley 3 certainly delivers on my expectations.

In Monument Valley 3, you embark on a fresh narrative journey – one that encompasses themes of hope, sorrow, and the challenge of self-reliance. Although it’s not primarily a story-driven game, as dialogue is minimal between levels, the game subtly communicates its tale through character movements and animations, offering a rich and engaging narrative experience.

This tale illustrates a scenario where the world seems to be falling apart, floodwaters are rising, and the individual who once provided significant aid in guiding your lighthouse is absent. Now, it’s up to you to embark on your own journey, extend assistance to others, and restore light to the world once more.

In Monument Valley 3, the puzzles are strategically structured, starting off simple to allow your mind to adapt to a fresh point of view. As the game progresses, the challenges become increasingly complex and intricate, making levels seem less straightforward. To solve them, you often need to scrutinize the screen closely for subtle clues that can help guide your actions. Interestingly, while most levels are on suspended beams within structures, some levels unexpectedly allow you to roam freely through fields of wheat. This shift in environment significantly alters your thought process.

In some of the chapters, after solving the various levels, you can actually drive a boat around the world. The water can be choppy at places, but there are moments when you need to work between two smaller puzzles or go into new structures to get to new areas of the map. This gives more depth to the game and adds to the story itself.

In Monument Valley 3, there’s a sense of optimism that pervades throughout its narrative, and as you progress, the puzzles become uniquely challenging in the latter stages. It’s impressive to maintain a sense of novelty on the third installment of this franchise!

This work initially launches with ten chapters, and a chapter release schedule can be found on its menu. This roadmap indicates approximately when each subsequent chapter will be published, all throughout 2025. I’m eager to discover what becomes of my character, Noor, and how she works towards rebuilding the world that crumbled around her.
