As a gamer with a soft spot for both gaming and movies, I must say that Kiernan Shipka‘s journey from Sally Draper to the hilarious college freshman in Sweethearts is nothing short of impressive. Growing up on the set of Mad Men, learning comedic timing from none other than Jon Hamm himself, and honing her improv skills in her hometown of Chicago, it’s no wonder that Shipka has become such a versatile actress.
Among the most amusing movies set for release in 2024 is “Sweethearts,” where Kiernan Shipka engages in uproarious college antics alongside co-stars Nico Hiraga and Caleb Hearon. In an interview with TopMob, the 25-year-old actress fondly reminisced about how her time on the Mad Men cast played a significant role in shaping her comedic side.
Next year marks ten years since the finale of the acclaimed TV show “Mad Men,” but Kiernan Shipka is finding it hard to forget her time on the AMC series, as she revealed in our chat.
Speaking of diversions, let me share a bit about my background. I spent my formative years immersed in Second City, an experience I cherished deeply. Later on, I found myself in a more serious setting, Mad Men. However, my passion for improv never waned. The lessons I gleaned from my instructors and fellow performers were priceless. They taught me the value of being spontaneous, amusing, and fearless – even in the face of failure. As for comedic timing, I can’t help but find Jon Hamm hysterical, given our close proximity during those years.
Kiernan Shipka had an unique upbringing, as she essentially grew alongside Jon Hamm in their professional lives, given that they worked together since she was just seven. Though the show tackled some heavy themes of the 1960s, fans are well aware of Hamm’s knack for humor, and Shipka acknowledges that she picked up quite a bit from him during their time working together. As she went on to say:
To be frank, everyone on the Mad Man set was quite amusing off-camera as well. In fact, during table reads, John Slattery would often crack jokes that left everyone in stitches. There were numerous humorous moments behind the scenes too, which I believe greatly influenced my performance.
Behind the scenes of the Emmy-winning drama series Mad Men, there was often a lighthearted atmosphere, according to Kiernan Shipka. On screen, she portrayed Sally Draper, the eldest child of Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm. Initially, her role was relatively minor, but from Season 3 onwards, Kiernan held her own among her fellow actors.
Is it surprising that Kiernan Shipka is funny in “Sweethearts,” considering her comments about the cast of “Mad Men”? The actress also revealed that she was involved in improv comedy in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois, which contributed to developing her sense of humor. In this new comedy, available for streaming with a Max subscription, Shipka portrays a college freshman who teams up with her friend (Hiraga) to end their long-distance relationships and embrace the newfound freedom of college life.
Returning to our hometown with a shared vision, I found myself deeply moved by my friend Palmer’s powerful coming-out journey as portrayed by Caleb Hearon. Interestingly, the movie incorporated the song “Unwritten,” which interestingly enough, was also featured in “Anyone But You.” The filmmakers graciously explained the significance of this choice for us. Currently, I can’t wait to watch Kiernan Shipka in “Sweethearts”!
