As a hardcore gamer who’s also a die-hard Friday Night Lights fan, I can’t contain my excitement about the potential reboot of this iconic series! Having grown up with the original show and watching it multiple times (I even have a Dillon Panthers jersey), this news feels like a dream come true.
A potential reboot of Friday Night Lights is staying within the NBCUniversal family.
After a fierce competition among bidders, Peacock has secured the rights for the project that is currently being developed on NBCU’s streaming platform. Previously, Universal Television had been developing a new take on the popular 2006-11 series, but no network or streamer was involved until now.
The revamped edition will bring back some pivotal creative minds from the initial series, including Peter Berg (creator), Jason Katims (showrunner), and Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment as executive producers. They will all serve as executive producers for the reboot, in addition to Kristen Zolner from Imagine Entertainment.
The tagline for the fresh take on FNL goes as follows: “After a catastrophic hurricane strikes, an unconventional high school football team and their temporary coach, struggling to recover, embark on an unexpected quest for the Texas state championship. They become a symbol of hope for their town in this new setting.” This revised project is likely set outside of Dillon, Texas, which, as seen throughout its five seasons, does not appear to be located near the Gulf Coast of the state.
The TV series “Friday Night Lights” was originally based on a 1990 nonfiction book titled “Friday Night Lights” by H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger. This book tells the story of Permian High School’s football team in Odessa, Texas. The director and co-writer of a 2004 movie adaptation of this book later created the series, which was broadcast on NBC and DirectTV’s 101 Network.
Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton led the ensemble of the original series, appearing alongside Jesse Plemons, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gilford, Minka Kelly, Gaius Charles, Scott Porter, Aimee Teegarden, Adrianne Palicki, and Michael B. Jordan, among others. The show served as a springboard for several actors who played students and football players, helping to launch their careers.
