As a seasoned cinephile who’s witnessed the evolution of Hollywood from VHS tapes to streaming platforms, I can confidently say that Willem Dafoe is one of those rare actors who’ve managed to maintain their relevance and versatility across decades. His potential return as Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man 4’ is a testament to the enduring appeal of this iconic character and the magic of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Willem Dafoe is renowned for his tireless work ethic in the acting industry, a reputation he has maintained over many years. In the year 2024, he graced the screens in four different productions, namely ‘Kinds of Kindness’, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’, ‘Saturday Night’, and ‘Nosferatu’. During interviews for ‘Nosferatu’, where Dafoe plays a character determined to annihilate the malevolent Count Orlock, he was queried by Entertainment Tonight about a cherished role, Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin. They asked if he might revive this role in Marvel’s forthcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’. Dafoe responded:
Let’s wait and see. [Chuckles] There’s a chance I might return. Working with Tom in the Spider-Man movies was fantastic, and honestly, it was a blast making them all.
This statement mirrors comments Dafoe made last year: “If everything were ideal, certainly… I mean, it’s an excellent role. I appreciated the dual role, as it was present twice. Twenty years ago and more recently, both instances offered distinct experiences, but I enjoyed myself during both.
Initially, Willem Dafoe made his debut as the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s hit movie Spider-Man (released in 2002). In this film, he played the primary antagonist and met his demise at the end of the story. However, contrary to expectations, Dafoe reprised his role for both Spider-Man 2 (2004) and 3 (2007), but this time, he appeared as a ghost tormenting his son Harry Osborn, portrayed by James Franco. The character was revived again for the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home. If Dafoe appears once more in the series, it would mark his fifth appearance within the franchise.
Considering that it appears his storyline has concluded in “No Way Home,” the chances of seeing Dafyne’s Green Goblin again might seem slim. However, given the actor’s readiness to reprise the role and the possibilities offered by multiple universes, anything could be possible.
‘Spider-Man 4’ Will Deal With Spidey’s Abandonment of Peter Parker
Currently, little is disclosed about the fourth Spider-Man film in Sony and Marvel’s shared universe. It’s scheduled for filming to commence in 2025, with a planned release date in July 2026. Producer Amy Pascal hinted that the movie will focus on Spider-Man (Peter Parker) choosing to relinquish his identity and the consequences of this choice. Lead actor Tom Holland has confirmed his return, but no other cast members have been announced yet, leaving us unsure if Zendaya will reprise her role as MJ.
There’s been a lot of chatter about the potential storyline for the upcoming film, with some predicting it could be another trip through multiple universes, while others believe it might follow the comic book series “Devil’s Reign,” where Spider-Man and Daredevil confront Mayor Wilson Fisk.
In the upcoming fourth “Spider-Man” movie, Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) is set to be in charge. He replaces Jon Watts, who was responsible for the direction of the previous three films within the series. The screenplay is penned by Chris McKenna and Eric Sommers, known for their work on “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “No Way Home”.
