As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for comic book adaptations and a deep appreciation for both horror and character-driven narratives, I am beyond excited about Mike Flanagan writing the script for the Clayface standalone movie in the DC Universe!
The DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran is expanding again, as a fresh villain film has been unveiled. Although the casting for their revamped Batman remains unknown, we’re starting to get a glimpse of the various villains he might face in this updated franchise. Last month saw the announcement of a Deathstroke/Bane crossover movie, but the most recent DC character to receive a solo film is much more fantastical. The elusive Clayface will finally appear on the big screen for the first time in live-action – and DC has enlisted an ideal writer for the project.
By the set deadline, it has been announced that Clayface will star in his very own film within the latest DC Universe. Renowned horror director Mike Flanagan is currently drafting the script for DC Studios. At this point, a director for the project remains to be determined. First appearing in Detective Comics #40 back in 1940, Clayface was DC Comics’ first shapeshifter. Over time, numerous characters have taken on the role, but Basil Karlo is arguably the most well-known. A talented actor before a fateful car accident, Karlo employed a toxic substance to preserve his face – a compound that ultimately merged with his genetic makeup, granting him the power of shape-shifting. Using these abilities for nefarious purposes, he became one of Gotham City’s most formidable villains.
Mike Flanagan, known to horror enthusiasts for his exceptional work, has shown interest in bringing the character Clayface to the big screen. Behind projects like “Doctor Sleep,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” on Netflix, Flanagan expressed his idea for a Clayface film back in 2021, describing it as a blend of horror, thriller, and tragedy. The movie is said to be under development since 2023, with reports suggesting that it may not portray Clayface as the antagonist. Instead, the story could delve into the origins of Clayface or explore his life after leaving behind his criminal past, where he worked alongside Batman.
Clayface Was Almost ‘The Batman Part II’s Villain
Known for his unusual characteristics such as a gooey form, dramatic personality, and ability to change shapes, Clayface is among DC Comics’ more extraordinary characters. Remarkably, this character was nearly introduced in Matt Reeves’ highly realistic Batman universe. Following the debut of The Batman in 2022, rumors surfaced that Clayface would be the primary villain in The Batman Part II.
Matt Reeves dispelled the rumor that magical villains would appear in the universe of “The Batman,” stating instead that it would not feature supernatural adversaries such as Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, and Mr. Freeze, who had been speculated to make an appearance. With a series of Easter eggs found in HBO’s “The Penguin” series hinting towards it, fans now suspect the main antagonist will be the Court of Owls. Other possibilities include Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb, Barry Keoghan’s Joker, fresh characters like crime boss Black Mask, Victor Zsasz, or even Deathstroke.
Mike Flanagan’s Clayface film doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet. The announcement doesn’t assure that the movie will definitely be shown in theaters. James Gunn often stresses that not every project in development will progress to production, as it hinges on the quality of the scripts.
