As a dedicated fan of thought-provoking and character-driven series, I find myself deeply disappointed by the snubbing of “Pachinko” at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Having immersed myself in its rich tapestry of four generations of a Korean family, I can confidently say that it deserves a place among the best dramas of 2024.

This week marked the unveiling of the nominees for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards. Despite being tarnished by years of controversy, the event has been trying to revamp its image in recent times following its separation from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This year’s nominations brought some delightful surprises (with The Substance receiving multiple mentions), but as is often the case, there were also some unexpected omissions. The television categories, in particular, raised quite a few eyebrows, with HBO mainstays like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Industry, and even House of the Dragon only managing a few nominations collectively.

But maybe the most disappointing snub of all was one of the least surprising. Apple TV’s Pachinko, despite being a critical darling, hasn’t seen much success on the awards circuit, and that trend sadly continued this week as it was completely shut out of the Golden Globe nominations. And it felt particularly egregious this year; while the lineup in the Drama Series category is solid overall, Pachinko has so clearly been one of television’s crowning achievements in 2024. Frankly, it deserved a slot more than The Day of the Jackal, Slow Horses, and arguably even The Diplomat.

It’s rather disheartening to note that it’s not just the Golden Globes; apart from the Critic’s Choice Awards, many other industry award shows have largely overlooked “Pachinko.” Given its extensive critical acclaim, it’s truly puzzling to observe how these prominent groups seem to favor “The Morning Show” over it, despite the latter’s perceived weaker achievements.

It appears that Pachinko hasn’t been able to generate enough public interest or celebrity endorsement to gain the recognition it deserves. For two consecutive seasons, it has found itself overshadowed by other Apple TV series in award consideration – Severance last year and Slow Horses this time around. Given that Apple TV typically prioritizes its promotional efforts on the shows with the most buzz, this could be a reason behind Pachinko’s lack of recognition.

It’s worth noting that foreign-language series have been overlooked by the industry for a long time, with this year marking a significant change as Shogūn became the first non-English series to win the Best Drama award. Similarly, shows like Squid Game have garnered guild recognition, but Pachinko, despite its quality, hasn’t yet gained the same level of public attention as those two shows have.

Despite not receiving much industry acclaim, let me assure you that “Pachinko” is an exceptional and underestimated show currently airing. Its second season was nothing short of outstanding, maintaining the high standards it set earlier. Although it deviates from typical conventions of prestige TV by focusing on four generations of a Korean family and delving into how familial bonds transcend time, it’s still a subtle yet powerfully understated series that showcases deep empathy for its characters and steers its narrative with restraint.

Despite the fact that its storytelling approach might not align perfectly with the current demands of the television industry, Pachinko offers a unique blend of quiet moments and deep emotion, making it a series to be savored rather than binged. The two-year gap between seasons may have disrupted the narrative flow for some viewers, but in an era where many shows prioritize plot over character development, a show like Pachinko stands out as especially accomplished. Unfortunately, it seems that Pachinko hasn’t received the recognition it deserves up to this point. You can stream Seasons 1 and 2 of Pachinko on Apple TV.
