The star-studded lineup is nothing short of breathtaking, and the fact that they’ve managed to secure Hollywood heavyweights like Martin Scorsese, Anthony Mackie, Charlize Theron, and many more, all playing heightened versions of themselves, is a testament to their storytelling prowess.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have gathered an incredible ensemble for their upcoming comedy, “The Studio” on Apple TV+. In this series, I step into the shoes of a Hollywood executive, getting up close and personal with some heavyweights in the industry – stars like Martin Scorsese, Anthony Mackie, Zoë Kravitz, Charlize Theron, Ron Howard, Bryan Cranston, Zac Efron, and Olivia Wilde. These talents will grace our screens as larger-than-life versions of themselves, offering a side-splitting and biting commentary on Tinseltown and the industry that drives it.
In a recent chat with Vanity Fair, Goldberg and Rogen shared insights into the creation process of The Studio, revealing how deeply personal the project was for them. As per the official synopsis of The Studio, this comedy series will focus on Rogen’s character, Matt Remick – a movie studio executive – and his inner circle of feuding executives. Together, they navigate their insecurities while trying to manage demanding artists and ruthless corporate bosses, all in an attempt to create exceptional films.
As Goldberg explained to VF:
As we climbed the Hollywood ladder, we often thought, “These executives are ruining our films! They’re causing nothing but problems.” However, as time passed, we came to understand that many of them are sincere and passionate about movies, just like us. They’ve taken on roles where they can sometimes be the antagonist, but there are also those who are simply difficult, spoiling films with their negative attitudes and lacking any real artistic contribution. Yet, a significant number genuinely care, pouring their hearts into their work, only to face criticism and unfair treatment. This struggle is, in a way, dramatic and intriguing.
Landing such a star-studded cast wasn’t without its challenges, though:
Goldberg explains, “We aimed high and included many potential cast members, but fortunately, some of them came on board. However, not everyone was able to fulfill their roles, either by choice or circumstance. So we had to adapt. There were instances where a script was tailored for a specific actor, only for them to be unable to perform it. This required us to completely overhaul the script, including every single joke, since those jokes were crafted specifically for that individual.
Directing Martin Scorsese And Other Hollywood Icons
Rogen and Goldberg, known for their work on films such as “Superbad”, “Neighbors”, and “The Boys”, teamed up with Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory from “Veep” along with Frida Perez to co-create the series. They’ve based much of its satirical tone on the authentic experiences within the entertainment industry, claiming that about 80% to 85% of “The Studio” mirrors reality.
One unexpected addition to their roster is Martin Scorsese, an Oscar-winning filmmaker whom Rogen had never encountered before. This esteemed director, renowned for classics like Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull (along with many other iconic Hollywood films), makes his appearance in the series’ debut episode, set to air on March 26th. Working with such a visionary filmmaker was undeniably nerve-racking.
In a casual conversation, Rogen recalls his mother called him that morning and exclaimed something along the lines of, “Wow, you’re supposed to direct Martin Scorsese! Isn’t that amazingly daunting?” To which he replied, “Thanks, Mom. Yes, it’s quite intimidating. Your enthusiasm isn’t exactly calming me down.
However, it’s Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos who might shock you the most in The Studio. This is his first acting role, making it intriguing since Apple TV+, a significant rival of Netflix, is involved. Rogen confessed that persuading Sarandos to join was a challenging task, but they eventually succeeded.
Alongside Rogen and Goldberg, the roles of co-executive producers and co-directors are also held by them. The Studio‘s inaugural season is set to feature ten half-hour episodes, graced by stars like Rogen, Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz, and Chase Sui Wonders. This series will make its debut on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, releasing two episodes simultaneously. From then on, fresh episodes will be aired every Wednesday, ending the season run on May 21, 2025.
Apart from “The Studio,” Rogen will be back on Apple TV+ for season 2 of “Platonic,” joining Rose Byrne once again. However, a specific air date is still to come.
