Ranbir Kapoor’s sister Riddhima reveals his favorite dish grandfather Raj Kapoor used to prepare and it’s every non-vegetarian’s delight

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for cinematic history and familial bonds, I find myself deeply moved by Riddhima Kapoor Sahni’s heartfelt reminiscences of her grandfather, the legendary Raj Kapoor. Having grown up in a family where the love for food and cinema is as profound as their bond with each other, I can only imagine the warmth and joy that must have filled those Chembur house weekends.

Raj Kapoor, revered as one of the legends of Indian cinema, continues to be an iconic figure in the industry. As the Kapoor family gears up to celebrate the birth centenary of this cinematic giant, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni shares a heartwarming memory. She reveals that her brother Ranbir’s favorite dish, lovingly prepared by their grandfather Raj Kapoor, was none other than a mouthwatering butter chicken—every non-vegetarian’s delight.

More recently, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni warmly recalled times spent with her beloved grandfather, Raj Kapoor, in an interview with Indian Express. She fondly remembered cherished moments from her childhood, particularly weekends at their home in Chembur, where she enjoyed the company of not only Raj but also Krishna Kapoor.

On numerous occasions, she and her brother, Ranbir Kapoor, would drop by, occasionally accompanied by friends for overnight stays. The grandparents always looked forward to their company, fostering an inviting and cheerful ambiance.

Additionally, she mentioned that her famous grandmother, Raj Kapoor, often prepared meals for them himself. She cherished the memories of him cooking their preferred dishes, particularly macaroni and cheese, which eventually became a regular dish at home.

She noted that it bore his distinct flair, with an enchanting quality she thought contained a hidden essence. She reminisced about the evident care put into its creation, and to this day, the taste of its delightful flavor lingers in her memory.

Riddhima cherished the mac and cheese, but for Ranbir, his grandfather’s butter chicken held a particular charm. “His butter chicken was Ranbir’s favorite dish,” she explained. “He loved it in all sorts of combinations – like butter chicken with noodles or fried rice, or even with other foods. As children, we didn’t care about the strangeness; we just enjoyed it immensely.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share a fascinating culinary tradition from my past. My beloved grandmother used to prepare a unique dish she called ‘Chinese aloo’. It was essentially a fried potato, reminiscent of an aloo tikki, but prepared with a distinct Chinese twist. This delightful dish was a cherished favorite among our family, adding another scrumptious memory to our childhood.

Riddhima added that during weekends, she and Ranbir often went out with their grandparents. She nostalgically recalled that Sundays were spent at Big Splash in Vashi, which was followed by a trip to Udupi – Raj Kapoor’s preferred South Indian eatery. There, he would savor the idli and dosa, appreciating the uncomplicated joys of life. She depicted those times as delightfully entertaining and overflowing with cherished recollections.

To pay homage to the legendary Raj Kapoor on his 100th birth anniversary, I, as an ardent fan, am thrilled about the collaboration between RK Films, Film Heritage Foundation, and NFDC-National Film Archive of India. This grand tribute, ‘Raj Kapoor 100 – Celebrating the Centenary of the Greatest Showman’, will gracefully display 10 of his timeless masterpieces across 135 cinemas in 40 cities throughout India, from December 13 to 15. It’s a heartfelt celebration that no Raj Kapoor admirer like me should miss!
