As a lifestyle expert with a profound appreciation for the rich tapestry of Bollywood, I find myself deeply moved by the legacy of Raj Kapoor, a veritable titan who defined the golden era of Indian cinema. His timeless roles and groundbreaking storytelling continue to resonate with audiences today, and his influence can still be felt in the work of his grandson, Ranbir Kapoor.
14th December marks the tribute to the legendary Raj Kapoor, a trailblazer of Bollywood’s golden age and founder of RK Films. With iconic performances in Awaara, Shree 420, and Mera Naam Joker, Kapoor’s unique ‘tramp’ persona and revolutionary storytelling continue to influence us. On the anniversary of his birth, let’s rewind to a poignant moment when his grandson, Ranbir Kapoor, was reminded of Raj Kapoor’s rich acting legacy during a conversation about acting advice.
Once on Aap Ki Adalat, the legendary Rishi Kapoor shared a heartwarming tale about a time when my adored star, Ranbir Kapoor, sought his guidance on lip-syncing for a movie scene. Caught up in the tricky task of matching his performance to a pre-recorded track, young Ranbir turned to his father, seeking wisdom. Amused and proud, I, as Rishi Kapoor, was touched by the call, playfully pointing out that he was both the grandson of the iconic Raj Kapoor and the son of yours truly, yet still needed a helping hand.
He shared, “I said you are the grandson of Raj Kapoor, son of Rishi Kapoor, and you are asking me this? He said, ‘I don’t know how to do it.'”
As a lifestyle expert, I wholeheartedly suggested to Ranbir Kapoor that he should let loose with his vocal cords, really belt out those tunes so powerfully that even his fellow cast members might ask him to tone it down – and perhaps because it’s slightly off-key! The secret, as I see it, lies in making the performance look genuine on screen. While we all know that iconic singers like Kishore Kumar or Mohammad Rafi are behind those melodies, it’s essential for actors to convincingly portray the act of singing themselves.
In honor of Raj Kapoor’s 100th anniversary, a unique Raj Kapoor Centennial Film Festival is planned, showcasing his classic movies like Awaara, Shree 420, Sangam, and Mera Naam Joker at PVR-Inox and Cinepolis theaters in approximately 135 locations across India. The festival aims to make these screenings affordable for a broad audience.
On the opening night, an extraordinary outdoor movie event is planned, featuring a live orchestra playing the timeless music of Shankar-Jaikishan. Moreover, the Kapoor family will share exclusive, behind-the-scenes clips from Raj Kapoor’s films, creating a sentimental atmosphere.
The climax of the festivities will feature a magnificent tribute to the iconic movie director, complete with a dazzling fireworks show and the inspiring melody of “The Show Must Go On” echoing throughout.
